Season planner for South Africa

South Africa does not have one dive season. The Western Cape is driven by wind and winter fronts, while KwaZulu-Natal is warmer year-round but sees clearer winter water and summer storm cycles. Many travelers build a two-coast plan and then use a weather buffer to land the best days.

As a reference for water temperature seasonality: Cape Town often averages around 15°C in Aug and about 19°C in Feb, while Durban averages around 21°C in Aug and about 26°C in Feb. Upwelling and wind can push local readings colder than the averages.

As a rule of thumb: Oct - May is easiest for Cape Town weather, May - Sep is strongest for east-coast shark diving, Apr - Jun and Sep - Nov are sweet spots for Sodwana, and June - July is prime time for the Sardine Run expedition.

Ideal: Milder weather across regions, fewer winter fronts, and more flexible sea states. Cape winds often ease to around 20.0 kph on good mornings.

Plan Carefully: Winter fronts in the Cape, colder water on southern coasts, and expedition conditions on the Wild Coast. Big wildlife rewards if you plan for cancellations.

Western Cape: Generally drier in summer, wetter in winter.

Ideal: East coast often has clearer windows and peak shark season; Wild Coast expedition months. Expect surface winds around 15.0 kph to 25.0 kph on typical boat mornings.

Plan Carefully: Summer crowds and more storm-driven variability on the east coast; strong Cape afternoon winds and upwelling can make the Atlantic side colder.

Cape Town: Often best for weather from Oct May, but coldwater exposure is still part of the deal.
