When To Go

Season planner for Apo Reef Natural Park

Apo Reef sits off the west side of Mindoro, so sea state is strongly influenced by Philippine monsoon patterns. In general, the dry-season window from November to May offers more reliable crossings and clearer water. Southwest monsoon (Habagat) months can bring more rain and rougher seas on the western side of the country, and PAGASA notes the peak of tropical cyclone activity is typically July through October.

Water temperature is commonly around 26°C to 31°C across the year. For liveaboards, note that many boats shift their schedules to other seasonal parks in spring, so availability can be as important as weather.

Ideal: More reliable crossings and calmer seas for an offshore reef.

Plan Carefully: Habagat rain and wind can increase surface chop. July to October is also the peak tropical cyclone window in the Philippines.

Add buffer days for weather delays, especially if your international connection is tight.

Ideal: Best odds for clear water and workable currents on walls and seamounts. Visibility often 20 m to 40 m.

Plan Carefully: Rougher sea state can cancel offshore trips. If you go, keep alternate plans for mainland diving.

Some operators report sea krait activity around Hunter's Rock in June to July.

Ideal: Higher odds of flat seas for buoy work and relaxed surface sessions. Water typically 28°C to 31°C.

Plan Carefully: Habagat and peak storm months can make offshore freediving unsafe or uncomfortable.

Even in prime months, choose sheltered locations first and keep strict surface support.

Ideal: Clearer water and calmer seas increase time on shallow coral plateaus. Visibility can reach 15 m to 30 m.

Plan Carefully: More chop and rain reduce visibility and comfort for surface swimmers.

Snorkelers should use flotation aids if offered and stay close to the guide.

Ideal: Cooler evenings for camping and lighthouse walks. Lower rain risk than Habagat months.

Plan Carefully: Wetter season can mean cancellations, mosquitoes, and fewer comfortable camping nights.

If you care about birdwatching, some seabird colonies build from March and peak around July.

Some dive guides report seasonal gatherings of banded sea kraits around Hunter's Rock in early wet-season months. Conditions can be rough, so dives are captain-dependent.
