What It Feels Like

Ari Atoll is where the Maldives dive postcard becomes real: thilas stacked with fish, channel drifts, and frequent shark and ray encounters. North Ari is famous for classic pinnacles like Maaya Thila and Fish Head, while South Ari adds a marquee experience: whale sharks in the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA). Most diving runs from resort dhonis and local-island boats, so you can do two tanks in the morning, a lazy lagoon afternoon, then a night dive when the reef turns predatory.

Signature Sites

Start Here

  • Maaya Thila

    A famous pinnacle with a top starting around {{ 6 | distance:m }} and reef edges that drop past {{ 12 | distance:m }} toward {{ 30 | distance:m }}.

  • Kuda Rah Thila

A protected underwater pinnacle close to South Ari, often recommended with nitrox.

  • Maamigili Beyru

    A South Ari outerreef dive inside a Marine Protected Area, typically dived around {{ 6 | distance:m }} to {{ 25 | distance:m }}.

Level Up

  • Bathalaa Thila

A classic North Ari pinnacle often dived as a drift around the reef edges.

Advanced

  • Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila)

A protected thila known for grey reef sharks, dense schooling fish, and currentdriven action.

  • Halaveli Wreck

    A {{ 40 | distance:m }} cargo ship sunk as an artificial reef, sitting roughly between {{ 21 | distance:m }} and {{ 28 | distance:m }}.

  • Kudimaa Wreck

A smaller wreck option in Ari Atoll that can be a relaxed change of pace from currentheavy thilas.

Planning Playbook

Operator Checklist

  • Practical planning in Ari Atoll is mostly about choosing the right base and respecting protected-area rules:
  • Base in South Ari (Dhigurah/Maamigili area) if whale sharks are your top priority.
  • Base in North or central Ari if you want a steady rotation of classic thilas, walls, and a wreck.
  • Expect current. Bring an SMB, listen to tide briefings, and be comfortable with drift pickups by dhoni.
  • In SAMPA, operators may limit group sizes and in-water time. Follow guide instructions closely and keep encounters calm.

Conditions Fallback

  • Base in South Ari (Dhigurah/Maamigili area) if whale sharks are your top priority.
  • Base in North or central Ari if you want a steady rotation of classic thilas, walls, and a wreck.
  • Expect current. Bring an SMB, listen to tide briefings, and be comfortable with drift pickups by dhoni.

Avoid

  • Use reef hooks only when instructed and only on bare rock or dead substrate, never on living coral.
