Overview

Whale sharks, thilas, and lagoon-blue escapes in the Maldives' signature atoll

Ari Atoll is the Maldives classic dive playground: coral pinnacles packed with fish, channel drifts, and reliable big-animal encounters. North Ari delivers famous thilas like Maaya Thila and Fish Head, where night dives, reef sharks, and hunting jacks keep cameras busy. South Ari is home to the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), a key whale shark hotspot with year-round sightings and a clear code of conduct for boats and swimmers. Between dives, expect lagoon-blue beaches, sunset dolphin cruises, and easy day trips to local islands such as Dhigurah for a dose of Maldivian culture. Most stays are resort-based with dhoni dive boats and house reefs, but guesthouse islands make Ari Atoll workable on a lighter budget. Transfers are straightforward from Velana International Airport by seaplane, domestic flight, or speedboat.

What Makes It Special

  • Year-round whale shark potential

South Ari's Marine Protected Area focuses on responsible whale shark encounters, with sightings possible in every month when conditions allow.

  • Thila diving with nonstop fish action

Compact pinnacles concentrate life: expect snapper clouds, reef sharks, and high-energy night dives on sites like Maaya Thila.

  • Choose your style: resort, guesthouse, or liveaboard

Ari Atoll works for short luxury stays (house reefs and dhoni diving) and for local-island trips that mix diving with culture and cafes.

  • Warm water, long bottom times

Most divers are comfortable in a 3mm to 5mm suit with water commonly around 27°C to 30°C.

Dhangethi Corner/ Dhangethi South is a sloping out reef where the top reef starts at seven metres before dropping away to a channel entrance. Along the out reef itself, keep looking out into the blue water for the chance of seeing some pelagic fish passing by. Dhangethi Corner has a very interesting coral peninsula that starts at 12 metres sloping down to the channel entrance at 25 metres. Schools of bat fish and clouds of fusiliers, turtles, napoleons and white tip reef sharks have all been spotted here.

Outer reef site off a local island, starting on a gentle slope from the surface to around 10 m before dropping into a steeper wall that extends beyond 40 m. The wall features smaller overhangs, and the dive route is typically chosen along the right or left shoulder depending on current. It is a well-known site for whale shark encounters, with fish schools often seen along the reef and out in the blue.
