When To Go

Season planner for Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Cocos has two overlapping patterns: a breezier trade-wind season (roughly May to October) and a calmer, more humid season (roughly November to April). Water temperature stays warm year-round between 26°C and 29°C, but wind direction and strength change how easy it is to reach outer-reef sites and how mellow lagoon snorkelling feels. Rainfall can peak around late summer into mid-year, so pack a light rain layer even on a dive trip. Because flights and beds are limited, shoulder months can be a sweet spot if your dates are flexible.

Ideal: Lighter winds, lagoon often smoother, warm water around 28°C

Plan Carefully: Trade winds often 28.0 kph to 46.0 kph, more chop; best for kitesurfing

Even in peak periods, the islands stay uncrowded because accommodation capacity is capped and flights are limited.

Ideal: More calm days for outer-reef walls; water 27°C to 29°C

Plan Carefully: Stronger trade winds can limit exposed sites; focus on lagoon dives and protected corners

Because there is a single dive operator, availability matters more than season.

Mantas are regularly reported in the lagoon, especially at known cleaning-station style bommies. Incoming tides can improve water clarity and increase the chance of a pass-through.

In the warmer months, divers may spot groups of breeding bumphead parrotfish, sometimes timed around full moons on reef edges and coral gardens.

Summer can bring territorial triggerfish guarding nests in sandy lagoon areas. Give nest zones a wide berth and keep fins close to avoid bites.

Turtles are seen year-round, but beach nesting activity often peaks in the warmer, wetter part of the year. Ask locally where beach access is appropriate and keep lights low at night.

Offshore waters can host migrating whales in the austral winter. Sightings are most likely from boats on calm days beyond the lagoon.

Consistent trade winds often build into the 28.0 kph to 46.0 kph range, turning the lagoon into a kitesurfing playground. Book lessons and gear early and respect no-go zones.
