Entry Requirements

Maldives commonly grants a tourist visa on arrival (often up to 30 days) if you have:

  • A passport valid for the stay
  • An onward or return ticket
  • Confirmed accommodation
  • Sufficient funds

You must also submit the Traveller Declaration via IMUGA for arrival and departure (it can be completed up to 96 hours before travel).

Gear Logistics Checklist

  • Pack fragile dive gear in carry-on.
  • Domestic flights can have tighter baggage limits. Pre-book extra weight for camera rigs.
  • Bring spares you cannot replace easily (o-rings, fin strap, batteries).
  • SMB is essential for drift pickups.

Practicalities

Currency

Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR)

MVR is the official currency, but many resorts quote and charge in USD. Credit cards are widely accepted at resorts and for transfers, while small USD cash is convenient for tipping and small purchases on excursions.

ATMs are reliable in Male and larger inhabited islands, but can be scarce in remote atolls. In Gaafu, assume limited ATM access and bring enough cash for tips and incidentals.

Electricity

230V 50Hz D, G

Many resorts provide universal sockets, but do not assume it. Bring a universal adapter and a power strip for charging cameras, lights, and computers.

Communications

Mobile coverage is generally good on inhabited islands via Dhiraagu and Ooredoo, with 4G in many areas. Resort Wi-Fi is the norm but performance varies by property. If you need redundancy, consider an eSIM before arrival and download maps and travel documents for offline access.

Language

Dhivehi is the official language. English is widely spoken in resorts, dive centers, and transport hubs.

Insurance

For Gaafu, insurance is not optional in practice. Choose a policy that covers scuba and freediving activities, hyperbaric treatment, and medical evacuation, and carry your policy number and hotline offline.

Packing list

  • Water is warm (often around 28°C). Many divers are comfortable in a 3mm full suit for long drifts.
  • Bring an SMB + spool, reef-safe sunscreen, and a small save-a-dive kit.
  • Pack adapters and a power strip for charging cameras and lights.
