Overview

Deep South Maldives diving: big channels, quieter reefs, and equator-side adventure

Gaafu Atoll sits in the Deep South of the Maldives, where the huge natural Huvadhoo Atoll is administered as Gaafu Alifu (north) and Gaafu Dhaalu (south). Expect current-swept channels (kandus), steep outer-reef walls, and resort house reefs that often feel quiet compared with the central atolls. From bases like Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa or Kooddoo Island resorts, scuba divers chase sharky drifts, soft-coral overhangs, and occasional blue-water sessions. Snorkelers and freedivers get warm water (often around 28°C) plus easy lagoon time for skills. The tradeoff is logistics: you usually connect via Male (MLE) then a domestic flight to Kooddoo (GKK) or Kaadedhdhoo (KDM). Many travelers pair Gaafu with an add-on hop to Fuvahmulah or Addu for even bigger pelagic action.

What Makes It Special

  • Remote atoll scale

Huvadhoo is one of the Maldives' largest natural atolls, so you get long reef walls, wide lagoons, and fewer boats on many sites.

  • Channel diving identity

If you love kandus, Gaafu delivers: current-driven drifts, shark encounters, and soft-coral overhangs when tide is running.

  • House reefs with real depth

Several resorts sit on steep drop-offs so you can add dawn dives, night snorkels, and freedive line sessions without depending on a schedule.

  • Built-in extension options

Gaafu is a natural launch point for Deep South add-ons like Fuvahmulah (pelagics) and Addu (history and wrecks), either by domestic hop or liveaboard route.
