South Africa's Whale Coast base for sharks, whales, kelp forests, and wild shorelines

Overview
Gansbaai is a working harbor town on South Africa's Cape Whale Coast, best known as the launch point for shark cage diving at Dyer Island and as a base for land-based whale watching across Walker Bay. Expect cold-water, big-ocean conditions, kelp forests, and a strong conservation narrative: Walker Bay is a Whale Sanctuary Marine Protected Area in peak season, and nearby De Hoop protects a long stretch of no-take coastline. From Gansbaai you can stack mornings on the water with afternoons on cliff paths, fynbos hikes, wine tasting in Hemel-en-Aarde, or a road trip to Cape Agulhas. This is not a tropical reef destination. It is a rugged, wildlife-first coast where planning around wind and swell pays off, and a 5mm-7mm wetsuit is normal for snorkeling, freediving, and temperate scuba.
Kleinbaai boat operators focus on close-to-home encounters with sharks, whales (seasonal), dolphins, seals, and seabirds.
Cliff paths around De Kelders and the Walker Bay coastline are among South Africa's best shore-based whale viewpoints in season.
Walker Bay's whale sanctuary protections and nearby no-take areas like De Hoop underline a strong conservation narrative.
Temperate kelp forests make for moody, photo-rich dives and snorkels when conditions line up.
