Safety And Conservation

Safety is excellent with short runs to sheltered leeward sites and 24-hour chamber access in George Town. Conservation is robust with expanded marine parks and regulated wildlife interactions.

Top Risks

  • Primary risk: Winter north swells
  • Secondary risk: Ironshore and surge
  • Emergency contact: Emergency Services (911)
  • Safety overview: Safety is excellent with short runs to sheltered leeward sites and 24hour chamber access in George Town.

Dive safety

  • Use moorings and carry an SMB for live-boating on walls.
  • Respect depth and gas limits on deep walls. Nitrox is recommended for repetitive diving.
  • Winter fronts can create sudden surge and currents. Brief exits carefully on ironshore entries.
  • Licensed guides only at Stingray City and within Wildlife Interaction Zones. No touching or feeding wildlife outside regulated programs.

Cayman Hyperbaric Services operates the island's recompression chamber at the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town with 24/7 on-call availability. For dive emergencies, call local EMS via 911, then contact DAN's 24/7 hotline.

Snorkel and freedive safety

  • Winter north swells

Dec to Mar cold fronts send swell to the North Wall and Seven Mile. Expect site changes or cancellations on short notice.

  • Ironshore and surge

Many shore entries are over ironshore with ladder access. Wear sturdy booties and plan exits if surge rises.

  • Sun and dehydration

Heat and humidity spike Aug to Oct. Hydrate, shade up, and watch exposure between dives.

Wildlife and protected areas

  • Grand Cayman's Enhanced Marine Parks include no-take zones and no-anchoring rules. Lionfish removal requires a Department of Environment permit.
  • Wildlife Interaction Zones regulate activities at Stingray City and certain sandbars. Outside these zones, touching or feeding wildlife is prohibited.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid contact with corals and sponges.

Do Not Do This

Avoid entering when winter north swells. Confirm local briefings before committing.
