Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Nadi International Airport (NAN)
  • Typical transfer: about 40 to 50 minutesutes by domestic flight to Kadavu when operating
  • Entry requirement: Most visitors clear Fiji entry at Nadi or Suva before continuing to Kadavu.
  • Getting around: Kadavu has limited roads and no normal rideshare ecosystem.

Getting There

Most international travelers enter Fiji through Nadi International Airport, then connect by Fiji Link domestic flight to Vunisea Airport on Kadavu. Some routings also work through Suva's Nausori Airport, especially if combining Kadavu with the capital or a ferry. Resorts normally meet guests at KDV and complete the trip by vehicle, small boat or both. Ferry service from Suva to Vunisea and Kavala Bay is a local alternative, but schedules are limited, cargo-oriented and weather sensitive. For Kokomo and some luxury stays, private air or seaplane-style transfers may be part of the package.

Transport: Pre-arranged resort boat, Pre-arranged resort vehicle, Local taxi around Vunisea, Private lodge transfer

Getting Around

Kadavu has limited roads and no normal rideshare ecosystem. Around Vunisea you may find local taxis or resort vehicles, but many resorts are reached by boat and most daily activity transport is arranged by the accommodation. On Ono and smaller islands, walking, boats and village paths replace road transport. Do not assume you can move between resorts independently without planning.

Entry Requirements

Most visitors clear Fiji entry at Nadi or Suva before continuing to Kadavu. Visa-exempt nationalities can receive a visitor permit on arrival, while others need to arrange the correct visa or permit in advance. Non-Fijian passport holders should carry a passport valid for at least 6 months, a return or onward ticket, accommodation details and proof of sufficient funds. Requirements can change, so check Fiji Immigration and your airline before travel.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Small domestic aircraft and boat transfers are the limiting factors. Check baggage allowance before packing dive gear, camera rigs or freedive fins. Resort dive centers can usually supply tanks, weights and rental gear, and Kokomo specifically notes on-site equipment availability, but exact sizes, DIN/yoke compatibility, nitrox and spare parts should be confirmed before arrival. Bring personal masks, computers, SMBs, prescription lenses, reef-safe sunscreen and critical medications because replacement shopping on Kadavu is limited.

Practicalities

Currency

Fijian Dollar (FJD)

Use Fijian dollars for local purchases, ferry contingencies, village crafts, small tips and cash-only situations. Resorts usually accept cards for bills, but remote transfers, villages and small suppliers may not.

Withdraw cash in Nadi or Suva before flying to Kadavu. ATMs and banking options are limited on the island, and remote resorts may not have easy cash-out options.

Electricity

240V 50Hz I

Fiji uses the Australia/New Zealand style type I plug. Remote resorts may use solar or generator power and may limit charging hours, so bring a universal adapter, power bank and dual-voltage chargers.

Communications

Vodafone and Digicel are the main visitor options, with tourist SIMs commonly purchased at Nadi Airport and registered with a physical passport. Coverage on Kadavu can be patchy, especially at remote resorts or on boat routes. Download confirmations, maps and emergency contacts before leaving Nadi or Suva, and ask whether your resort has Wi-Fi, satellite backup or limited power hours.

Language

English is widely used in tourism, while Fijian and Fiji Hindi are national languages. In Kadavu villages, Fijian etiquette matters. Learn simple phrases such as bula for hello and vinaka for thank you, and follow resort guidance for sevusevu, village dress and photo permission.

Insurance

Buy travel insurance that covers remote-island medical evacuation, missed domestic connections, ferry or flight disruption, cyclone-season cancellation and scuba or freediving at your planned depth. Dive-specific coverage such as DAN is strongly recommended for scuba trips because Kadavu is far from hyperbaric support.

Packing list

Pack as if replacement shopping will be limited: personal mask, dive computer, SMB, booties, reef-safe sunscreen, rashguard, dry bag, basic first-aid kit, insect repellent, power bank, type I adapter, headlamp, rain shell, modest village clothing, cash, seasickness medication and critical prescriptions. Photographers should bring spare O-rings, silica packs and enough batteries for limited charging windows.
