Overview

Volcanic shore dives, angel sharks, and lunar-landscape rest days in the Canary Islands

Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands' easiest dive holidays: fly into ACE, choose a base near Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca, then alternate sheltered shore dives, short boat runs, and volcanic topside days. Playa Chica gives beginners and photographers a dense house-reef playground with lava walls, rays, seahorses, groupers, nudibranchs, and winter angel sharks. Playa Blanca adds the Museo Atlantico sculpture reef and Papagayo beaches, while La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago marine reserve provide the wilder, permit-managed northern option. The island is genuinely year-round. Expect cooler Atlantic water in winter, warmer water in late summer and autumn, occasional wind-driven site changes, and superb non-diver value from Timanfaya, Cesar Manrique sites, La Geria wineries, Famara, and La Graciosa.

What Makes It Special

  • Land-based simplicity

Most trips are planned around shore-access dive centers, resort pickups, rental cars, and short boat dives rather than liveaboards.

  • Volcanic variety

Lava tubes, walls, sand channels, wreck features, sculpture reefs, and marine-reserve pinnacles make Lanzarote feel more varied than many compact island destinations.

  • Winter wildlife value

Cooler months can bring better odds of adult angel shark sightings, with fewer peak-summer crowds and good training conditions when the wind cooperates.

  • Non-diver strength

Timanfaya, Cesar Manrique architecture, La Geria vineyards, surf beaches, and La Graciosa make rest days feel like part of the main trip, not filler.

Best time to go

April to June and September to November

Good allaround weather, manageable crowds outside major holidays, and a strong balance between diving, snorkeling, hiking, wine country, and beaches.

Main caution: Peak holiday weeks feel busier and book faster.
