Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Edward Bodden Airfield (LYB)
  • Typical transfer: 5 to 15 minutesute drive
  • Entry requirement: Visitors generally need a valid passport or approved travel document valid beyond the return ticket date, plus a return or onward ticket, customs and immigration declarations, and enough funds for the stay.
  • Getting around: Little Cayman has no stoplights and very light traffic, but transport still needs planning.

Getting There

Most visitors arrive internationally at Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman, clear formalities, then connect on Cayman Airways Express to Edward Bodden Airfield on Little Cayman. Some Sister Islands itineraries route through Charles Kirkconnell International Airport on Cayman Brac. Little Cayman is a small domestic airfield, so luggage weight, weather, and aircraft schedules matter more than they do on a large-island trip. Build a buffer before international departures, especially after diving, and avoid planning a tight same-day connection from a final dive boat.

Getting Around

Little Cayman has no stoplights and very light traffic, but transport still needs planning. Resorts often provide airport pickup, while independent travelers should pre-book a rental car, scooter, bicycle, or e-bike. Drive on the left, keep speeds low, and watch for rock iguanas on warm pavement. Taxis and ride-share style options are limited, so do not assume you can improvise late-night transfers or last-minute beach pickups.

Entry Requirements

Visitors generally need a valid passport or approved travel document valid beyond the return ticket date, plus a return or onward ticket, customs and immigration declarations, and enough funds for the stay. Visa requirements depend on nationality, so check Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control before booking. Visitors may be admitted for up to 6 months, but the permission granted is decided at entry. Do not bring prohibited goods, and follow Cayman rules on controlled substances, firearms, and wildlife products.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Most scuba logistics are handled through resort dive operations, but small-island inventory is limited. Pre-book rental gear, nitrox, camera rinse needs, and any unusual sizes. Pack essential spares, prescription masks, reef-safe sun protection, medications, and computer batteries. Inter-island aircraft may have tighter baggage handling than international flights, so carry fragile regulators, computers, camera housings, and one change of dive clothing in hand luggage. Do not pack gloves for normal diving or snorkeling.

Practicalities

Currency

Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD)

The Cayman Islands Dollar is the official currency, and US dollars are widely accepted. Resorts and dive operators usually take cards, but small-island outages, minimums, or informal services make cash useful. Ask whether a quote is in KYD or USD before comparing prices.

ATMs and banking options are limited on Little Cayman compared with Grand Cayman. Bring a sensible amount of small USD or KYD cash for tips, small purchases, donations, and backup transport, then use cards for larger resort or dive bills when accepted.

Electricity

120V 60Hz A, B

Power and plugs are generally North America style. Bring a power strip only if it is safe, grounded, and allowed by your lodging, plus enough charging capacity for cameras, lights, computers, phones, and e-bikes. Dual-voltage chargers are still recommended for international travelers.

Communications

Lodging Wi-Fi is common, and Cayman mobile providers include Digicel and Flow. Coverage can be less forgiving on beaches, remote roads, and boat days, so download maps, save emergency numbers, and confirm whether your eSIM or roaming plan covers the Cayman Islands before arrival.

Language

English is the official and practical travel language. Caymanian warmth matters on a small island: greet people, drive slowly, ask before crossing private property, and treat operator briefings as local expertise rather than routine paperwork.

Insurance

Buy dive accident insurance and travel insurance that covers inter-island flight delays, storm disruptions, medical evacuation, and prepaid dive packages. Remote-island logistics make evacuation coverage more important than on a large resort island with immediate tertiary care.

Packing list

Pack a 3mm wetsuit or dive skin, rashguards, reef-safe sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, dry bag, binoculars, reusable bottle, seasickness medication, prescription medications, mask spares, computer battery, camera O-rings, and a compact first-aid kit. Do not bring gloves for normal diving or snorkeling.
