When To Go

Season planner for Marlborough Sounds

The Sounds sit in a temperate zone with four distinct seasons. Summer (December to March) is the warmest water window and usually the easiest time to combine diving, snorkeling, and kayaking. Shoulder seasons can deliver great conditions with fewer people, while winter brings colder water and more frequent wind and rain systems.

Because the outer Sounds connect to Cook Strait, plan for flexibility: a calm-day window can make Port Gore or Long Island-Kokomohua feel straightforward, while the same plan can become a no-go when wind builds.

Ideal: Warmest water of the year, often trending toward 16°C to 18°C in sheltered bays. Best all-round for mixed groups.

Plan Carefully: Coldest water (sometimes feeling closer to 12°C to 13°C) and more frequent fronts. Wind can build fast, occasionally pushing 40.0 kph on exposed water.

Expect the busiest accommodation period around late December and January (New Zealand summer holidays).

Ideal: Best comfort window for long dives. Water often sits around 14°C to 18°C depending on site and weather.

Plan Carefully: Cold water and more weather systems. Pick sheltered inner-Sounds sites and keep Port Gore as an optional bonus, not a guarantee.

Port Gore and the outer Sounds are most sensitive to weather funnels from Cook Strait.

Ideal: Warmest water and the calmest mornings for line training and kelp exploration. Plan early starts to avoid afternoon winds.

Plan Carefully: Cold exposure becomes the limiting factor. Short, conservative sessions and hot recovery layers matter more than pushing depth.

For freediving, prioritize sheltered coves and avoid busy channels.

Ideal: Most comfortable water for long surface sessions, especially with kids. Bring a full wetsuit even in summer.

Plan Carefully: Cold water makes it a short-session sport unless you have strong insulation. Prioritize the underwater observatory and sheltered bays.

Snorkeling quality depends heavily on wind and rain.

Ideal: Best blend of long daylight, warmer air, and calmer water for cruises, kayaking, and track sections.

Plan Carefully: Winter brings more rain and wind. Choose lower-elevation walks and keep boat trips flexible.

The Queen Charlotte Track runs yearround, but lodge availability and boat schedules can be seasonal.
