Safety And Conservation

Pattaya is convenient but not a set-and-forget destination. Visibility and sea state can change quickly with weather and tide, and there is heavy boat traffic around popular islands. The upside is strong infrastructure: many operators, clear boat procedures, and access to major medical facilities in Pattaya.

Top Risks

  • Primary risk: Variable visibility
  • Secondary risk: Boat traffic near islands
  • Emergency contact: Tourist Police (1155)
  • Safety overview: Pattaya is convenient but not a setandforget destination.

Dive safety

  • Stay close to your buddy and keep navigation simple in variable visibility.
  • Use an SMB on ascents, especially around Koh Larn and other high-traffic corridors.
  • Carry a cutting tool for fishing line risk, and avoid wreck penetration unless trained and equipped.
  • In May - October, expect sudden squalls. If the captain calls the dive, accept it.
  • Follow standard no-fly guidance after diving and keep your last deep dives well before travel day.

Pattaya has private hospitals and hyperbaric services. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya lists a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center and provides a direct contact number for information. In any suspected dive injury, alert your dive operator immediately, administer oxygen if trained and available, and contact emergency services. Save Thailand's emergency numbers (191 general, 1669 ambulance, 1155 tourist police) before your trip and keep your insurance details accessible offline.

Snorkel and freedive safety

  • Variable visibility

Visibility can swing fast with rain, wind, and tide. Choose farther islands for better odds and keep realistic expectations for near-shore sites.

  • Boat traffic near islands

Ferries, speedboats, and tour boats run constant routes. Use an SMB, stay within marked snorkel zones, and avoid surfacing in ferry lanes.

  • Fishing line and entanglement risk

Some areas have lines and nets. Carry a cutting tool and keep good buddy spacing near structure and wrecks.

  • Monsoon squalls and cancellations

From May - October, sudden squalls can cancel boats or shorten trips. Build buffer days and keep a topside backup plan.

Wildlife and protected areas

  • Do not touch coral, stand on reef, or chase turtles.
  • Use moorings where available and avoid anchoring on coral.
  • Reduce plastics: bring a reusable bottle and decline foam boxes and single-use packaging where possible.
  • Ko Samae San publishes rules including bans on alcohol, pets, and foam boxes. Treat the area as a protected site with controlled access.
  • Choose operators that brief reef etiquette and manage groups conservatively in shallow snorkel zones.

Do Not Do This

Avoid entering when variable visibility. Confirm local briefings before committing.
