Safety And Conservation

Phuket is a well-developed dive destination, but conditions still demand conservative planning. The biggest trip risks are monsoon sea state, currents on pinnacles and points, and heavy boat traffic. Choose reputable operators, follow briefings, and prioritize marine-park compliance and low-impact diving to protect the reefs that make the region worth visiting.

Top Risks

  • Primary risk: Southwest monsoon sea state
  • Secondary risk: Boat traffic and propeller risk
  • Emergency contact: Tourist Police (1155)
  • Safety overview: Phuket is a welldeveloped dive destination, but conditions still demand conservative planning.

Dive safety

  • Respect the season. In May to October, expect more swell and last-minute changes. Do not pressure operators to run in unsafe conditions.
  • Currents can build quickly on pinnacles and points. Stay close to your guide, keep good buoyancy, and avoid separation.
  • Use an SMB on ascent. Boat traffic is common on popular routes.
  • Keep profiles conservative if you are doing repetitive days, especially when adding deeper wreck dives.

Phuket has dedicated diving medicine support. Bangkok Hospital Phuket lists a Diving Medicine Center with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) services and a 24 hour on-call diving physician. Save the contact details before your trip and make sure your insurance covers diving incidents and evacuation if needed.

Snorkel and freedive safety

  • Southwest monsoon sea state

May to October can bring larger swell and rougher crossings. Expect cancellations and avoid overcommitting to offshore itineraries without buffer days.

  • Boat traffic and propeller risk

Popular bays and island routes have heavy longtail and speedboat traffic. Use an SMB (divers) or a bright snorkel vest and stay inside swim zones when present.

  • Current management on pinnacles and points

Shark Point area and exposed points at Racha Noi can run as drifts. Stay close to the guide, keep good spacing, and be ready for negative entries if briefed.

  • Heat and dehydration

Phuket is hot and humid year-round. Dehydration increases fatigue and can contribute to dive risk. Carry water, limit alcohol between dive days, and sleep enough.

Wildlife and protected areas

  • Follow marine-park rules and respect seasonal closures, especially for offshore parks like Similan.
  • Do not touch or stand on coral, and keep fins and gauges secured.
  • Never feed fish or chase turtles or sharks for photos. Let wildlife set the distance.
  • Choose operators that use moorings rather than anchoring on reefs, brief responsible behavior, and manage group size.
  • Reduce waste: carry a reusable bottle and refuse single-use plastics where possible.

Do Not Do This

Avoid entering when southwest monsoon sea state. Confirm local briefings before committing.
