When to go

Best time to visit Poor Knights Islands

The Poor Knights are genuinely year round, but your experience shifts with the seasons.

Best overall window

December to April

Longest days, warm air around 22°C to 24°C and sea temperatures near 20°C to 23°C, ideal for mixed diving and beach time.

Outside that window

Cooler water near 14°C to 16°C and more frequent fronts. Often excellent underwater visibility but you need heavier exposure protection and more flexibility for wind and swell.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.

Always true for this destination
  • Airfares into Auckland and domestic connections tend to be highest over New Zealand's summer school holidays (late December through January) and around Easter.
Seasonal cautions
  • Apr to May, Oct to Nov: Slightly cooler but still comfortable air, water easing toward 18°C to 20°C, fewer crowds and good chances of settled weather around Tutukaka.
  • Jun to Sep: Cooler water near 14°C to 16°C and more frequent fronts. Often excellent underwater visibility but you need heavier exposure protection and more flexibility for wind and swell.
