Revillagigedo Socorro Islands Mexico
Liveaboard-only giant manta and shark encounters inside Mexico's fully protected ocean park
Updated Jan 23, 2026 • 15 sources
Safety And Conservation
Socorro diving is advanced mainly because it is remote and oceanic. Currents, blue-water depth, and live skiff pickups are normal. Carry dive accident insurance, follow conservative profiles, and treat park wildlife rules as non-negotiable. Conservation is the point: Revillagigedo is a protected national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Top Risks
- Primary risk: Remoteness and limited medical support
- Secondary risk: Strong current and deep water
- Emergency contact: Mexico Emergency Number (911)
- Safety overview: Socorro diving is advanced mainly because it is remote and oceanic.
Dive safety
What Makes Socorro Different for Safety
- Remoteness: you are far offshore, so emergency response is slower than resort diving.
- Current and depth: many sites are pinnacles and walls with immediate depth and variable current.
- Skiff operations: entries and exits are from pangas with live pickups.
Practical Safety Habits
- Carry an SMB and deploy it as instructed by the guide.
- Stay with the group and do not chase animals into the blue.
- If you feel a downcurrent, signal, move horizontally toward structure (without touching), and follow the guide's plan.
- Respect park limits (commonly max depth 35 m and max 60 minutes) and keep extra gas in reserve for long pickups.
- Build conservative surface intervals and avoid pushing no-decompression limits on repetitive days.
Medical facilities are not available on the islands for tourists. Your liveaboard will typically carry oxygen, first-aid supplies, and emergency response equipment, but evacuation to the mainland may take time.
- Plan conservative diving and carry DAN (or equivalent) dive accident insurance.
- The nearest recompression options are on the Baja peninsula, commonly routed through Cabo San Lucas once back on the mainland.
- Save emergency numbers in your phone before you leave shore; you will not have normal cell service in the park.
Snorkel and freedive safety
Remoteness and limited medical support
You are far offshore. Evacuation can take time, and there is no on-island hospital. Carry dive accident insurance and follow conservative profiles.
Strong current and deep water
Many sites have immediate depth and can develop strong current, surge, and occasional downcurrents. Stay close to the guide and do not drift off the rock line.
Long ocean crossing
The crossing can be rough. If you are prone to seasickness, bring medication and start it before departure.
Rule compliance is enforced
Expect strict marine park rules: no touching wildlife, conservative interaction distances, and limited diving hours. Breaking rules can end dives for the group.
Wildlife and protected areas
Core Rules That Protect Wildlife
- Do not touch, ride, harass, or feed animals.
- Keep at least 2 m from the bottom and rock formations.
- Around mantas, keep at least 3 m and do not cut across their swim path.
- Around dolphins, do not chase. Hold position and let them choose the interaction.
- Around whale sharks, follow strict spacing and never block the shark's forward movement.
Low-impact Choices
- Avoid sunscreens that contain oxybenzone or octinoxate.
- Secure all gear to prevent loss overboard.
- Choose operators with clear briefings, strict guide ratios, and strong wildlife ethics.
Do Not Do This
Avoid entering when remoteness and limited medical support. Confirm local briefings before committing.
