When To Go

Season planner for Roatan

Roatan works year round, with air in the mid to high 20°Cs and sea temperatures around 27°C to 29°C. The driest spell is usually February to August, with warmer, stickier weather into mid year. Rain peaks from October to January, when cold fronts (northers) can bring wind, chop, and short dips in visibility on the north and west coasts. The Bay Islands sit outside the main hurricane belt but still feel passing systems, so flexible plans and travel insurance make sense.

Ideal: Drier weather, strong sun with 7 to {{ 8 | duration:hours }}s of daily light, light to moderate trades around 15.0 kph, and sea close to 28°C.

Plan Carefully: Wettest spell with more northers, choppier seas on the north and west, and more days better suited to land based plans.

Christmas to New Year, Semana Santa, and US spring break are peak weeks, especially in West Bay and West End.

Ideal: Calmer northwest seas, low rain, very good visibility, and water around 27°C to 28°C with fewer plankton blooms.

Plan Carefully: More rain and northers that can close north and west sites temporarily; south side usually remains workable and visibility recovers quickly when fronts pass.

Late winter and spring are peak for divers from colder climates and for eagle ray and possible whale shark sightings around Utila, so boats and resorts can fill.

Ideal: Warm, stable surface, frequent calm mornings, water near 29°C, and predictable currents that suit depth cycles and the late May Caribbean Cup.

Plan Carefully: Wetter and windier, with more rough days on north and west coasts; depth work still possible on sheltered leeward sites but with more schedule changes.

If you are targeting Caribbean Cup or depth blocks, plan around published dates and arrive early to acclimatize.

Ideal: Calmer mornings, warm water in the high 20°Cs, and good visibility on reef flats at West Bay, Half Moon Bay, and other park sites.

Plan Carefully: Higher odds of rain, runoff, and wind chop on exposed north shore; pick short windows on good forecast days and keep land backups ready.

Snorkel pressure is highest on cruise days and holidays.

Ideal: Drier weather, plenty of sun for beaches and hikes, and cooler evenings for walking West End or climbing Carambola's ridge.

Plan Carefully: Higher rain chances and some stormy days; schedule longer hikes and east end trips flexibly and keep indoor options in mind.

Cruise schedules heavily affect crowds at West Bay, Gumbalimba, and animal encounters.

Green and hawksbill turtles nest on Bay Islands beaches in warmer months. You may see tracks or marked nests on early beach walks. Follow Roatan Marine Park guidance: keep lights dim, give turtles space, and never touch adults or hatchlings.

Spotted eagle rays and southern stingrays glide along walls and sand flats and over seagrass beds. Sightings are especially common in cooler, clearer winter and early spring water, though they can appear year round.

Roatan is not a core whale shark spot, but some operators connect trips to Utila, where seasonal aggregations happen around seamounts. Late winter into spring is the main window but never guaranteed, so treat sightings as a bonus.

In late May, the Caribbean Cup depth competition runs off West Bay. You can watch athletes and safety teams from boats or shore and train with the same setup before or after. Expect more freedivers in town and tighter lodging around West End and West Bay.
