Most international travelers enter Fiji through Nadi International Airport (NAN), then connect to Matei Airport (TVU) on Taveuni with Fiji Link/Fiji Airways. Some routings also connect through Suva (SUV). Resorts commonly arrange airport pickup from Matei. Budget travelers or multi-island travelers may combine ferries, buses, and road transfers through Savusavu, Buca Bay, Natuvu, or Suva, but schedules can change and should be confirmed locally before relying on them.

Suva's airport can be useful for domestic connections to Taveuni or for travelers combining Taveuni with Fiji's capital and eastern routes.

Taveuni has taxis, resort vehicles, local buses, and private drivers, but no rideshare-style network to rely on. Roads can be slow, and the eastern rainforest side is best visited with a pre-arranged driver or guide. For diving, transfers are usually handled by the resort or operator. For independent touring, carry cash, confirm pickup times, and ask about Sunday or public-holiday limitations.
Check your nationality before travel. Tourism Fiji and Fiji immigration guidance say visitors generally need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay, return or onward ticket, a confirmed Fiji address, and a completed arrival card. Visa-exempt nationalities can enter without arranging a tourist visa in advance, while other passport holders need the correct visa or permit before boarding.
Bring critical dive and camera spares because island retail is limited. Confirm domestic baggage allowance before flying to TVU, especially with dive gear, strobes, housings, or freedive fins. Many divers rent tanks and weights locally but bring personal mask, computer, SMB, exposure suit, and reef-safe sun protection. Dry bags are useful for small boats and rain showers. Rinse facilities vary by resort, so ask photographers about camera tables and charging setup.
Fijian Dollar (FJD)
Use Fijian dollars for taxis, village fees, community tours, markets, and remote attractions. Some resorts and dive centers may quote or accept USD or cards, but local cash is still essential once you leave the resort corridor.
ATMs are limited on Taveuni compared with Nadi or Suva. Local dive-resort guidance notes ATMs at BSP in Somosomo, but travelers should withdraw or exchange money before flying to Taveuni and carry small notes for community fees.

Fiji uses Type I plugs like Australia and New Zealand. Travelers from North America, the UK, or Europe usually need an adapter, and non-dual-voltage devices may need a voltage converter. Bring a compact power strip only if it is rated for 240V.
Communications
Mobile coverage is best around villages, roads, and resort areas, then weaker on remote coasts, offshore boats, and rainforest hikes. Buy a local SIM or eSIM before leaving Nadi or arrange one on arrival, but do not assume reliable data at Lavena, Waitabu, or remote dive sites. Let your resort know your day plans when heading across the island.
Language
English is widely used in tourism, while Fijian and Fiji Hindi are also official and commonly spoken. Learn basic greetings such as bula and vinaka, dress modestly in villages, remove hats when appropriate, and follow your host's guidance for sevusevu or village visits.
Insurance
Buy travel insurance that covers domestic flight disruption, cyclone-season delays, medical evacuation, and adventure activities. Divers and freedivers should add DAN or equivalent dive accident coverage, including emergency oxygen, evacuation, chamber treatment, and missed-trip costs after a diving incident.
Packing list
Pack a 3mm wetsuit or hooded vest, reef-safe sunscreen, rashguard, SMB, dive computer, spare mask and fin straps, insect repellent, light rain shell, trail shoes or secure sandals, dry bag, Type I plug adapter, and enough prescription medication for delays. Photographers should bring spare O-rings, batteries, desiccant, and chargers. Carry FJD cash in small notes for community fees and remote snacks.
