Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Union Island Airport (UNI)
  • Typical transfer: 5 to 10 minutes taxi to Clifton
  • Entry requirement: Entry rules depend on nationality.
  • Getting around: Union Island is small enough that walking works in Clifton, but taxis are the practical tool for airport transfers, beach runs, and westcoast moves.

Getting There

Most travelers reach the destination one of three ways:

  • Fly into Argyle International Airport on Saint Vincent and connect onward by SVG Air or private charter to Union Island or Canouan.
  • Fly into Barbados and connect onward, which SVG Air currently promotes as one of the easiest ways into the Grenadines.
  • Arrive by yacht or charter boat and clear the appropriate formalities before moving south.

Tobago Cays itself is only accessible by sea. In practice, Union Island is the most useful human gateway because it combines the airport, Clifton jetty, customs, provisioning, dive logistics, and quick boat access to the park.

Airports

1

Union Island Airport

UNI • TVSU

1 km • 5 to 10 minutes taxi to Clifton

Closest air gateway to Clifton and the fastest aviation handoff for Tobago Cays departures. Union is the practical choice if your trip is centered on diving, day boats, or staying on Union itself.

Transport: Taxi, Hotel pick-up, Water taxi from Clifton Harbour

2

Argyle International Airport

SVD • TVSA

75 km • Connect by onward flight or charter to Union Island or Canouan, then continue by road or boat

The main international gateway for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, with official airport listings that include regional and long-haul carriers plus onward domestic connections.

Transport: SVG Air connection, Private charter, Taxi to Kingstown or domestic transfer points

3

Canouan Airport

CIW • TVSC

17 km • 45 to 60 minutes boat to Tobago Cays, depending on sea state and departure point

Useful alternative gateway if you are pairing Union and Tobago Cays with a Canouan stay or arriving by private aviation. Also a practical jump-off for private boat transfers into the park.

Transport: Private boat transfer, Resort launch, SVG Air connection

Getting Around

Union Island is small enough that walking works in Clifton, but taxis are the practical tool for airport transfers, beach runs, and west-coast moves. Discover SVG notes that a small number of public minibuses also operate on Union. For inter-island movement, ferries and water taxis matter more than road transport, and schedules should be treated as local and changeable rather than fixed forever online. If you need to make an early boat or flight, arrange transport the day before.

Entry Requirements

Entry rules depend on nationality. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' current official visa list states that nationals of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, China, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Nepal, Nigeria, and Syria require a pre-entry visa. Many other travelers enter visa-free for short tourist stays, but always verify against your passport and route before you fly.

Practical basics:

  • Carry a passport valid for entry with at least one blank page.
  • Be ready to answer customs questions and declare goods when required.
  • COVID-era testing and quarantine requirements were lifted by the government, but airline transit rules can still vary by routing.
  • If arriving by yacht, follow customs and immigration clearance procedures at the appropriate port of entry such as Clifton.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Remote-island logistics reward discipline:

  • SVG Air's published shared-charter baggage policy allows one checked piece up to 44 lbs at no charge, with fees for second or oversized bags and no guarantee that extra pieces travel on the same aircraft.
  • Carry dive computers, regulators, masks, cameras, batteries, and medications in cabin baggage where allowed.
  • Bring spares for mask straps, o-rings, charging cables, and camera seals.
  • Tank, weights, and guided diving are straightforward through Union operators, but retail replacement stock is limited.
  • If your trip depends on kites, surfboards, or oversized camera housings, pre-clear baggage charges and timing before the outbound flight.

Practicalities

Currency

Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD)

The Eastern Caribbean Dollar is the official currency. USD is widely accepted in tourism businesses, boat operations, and some restaurants, but change is often returned in EC dollars. Cards work best at larger hotels, dive operators, and established restaurants in Clifton; cash still smooths out transport, tips, and small harbor purchases.

Bank of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines lists a Union Island branch in Clifton with ATMs on site, and the bank's broader ATM notices include Union among active ATM locations. Even so, remote-island outages and weekend timing can bite, so arrive with backup cash.

Electricity

110V & 230V 50Hz A, B, G

Supply on small islands and in guesthouses can vary. Bring a universal adapter and dual-voltage chargers, especially if you are carrying camera batteries, lights, or laptop gear.

Communications

Digicel and Flow both operate in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and both have active Union Island presence. Expect the best signal around Clifton and inhabited islands. Coverage can weaken once you move into the cays, behind hills, or onto long boat runs. Do not assume you will have flawless mobile data for navigation or emergency lookup in the park; download maps, contacts, and travel documents ahead of time.

Language

English is the official language and the one travelers will use for hotels, operators, customs, and guides. You will also hear local Vincentian phrasing and Caribbean cadence in everyday conversation, especially around harbors and markets.

Insurance

For this destination, dive and evacuation insurance is strongly recommended rather than optional. Tobago Cays and Union Island are remote, boat transfers are weather-sensitive, and serious medical issues may require onward transport. Divers should carry policies that explicitly include scuba and medical evacuation rather than relying on generic trip cover alone.

Packing list

Pack for boats, sun, and backup logistics:

  • Rash guard or light 3mm suit for repeated water time
  • SMB for divers
  • Dry bag for boat days
  • Refillable bottle and electrolyte tablets
  • Own mask and snorkel if fit matters to you
  • Spare charging cables, plugs, and camera batteries
  • Motion-sickness medication if you are sensitive on small craft
  • Small EC dollar or USD notes for taxis, tips, and beach vendors
