Channel drifts, soft-coral walls, and an iconic night dive in a quieter Maldives atoll
Pick an activity mode to compare signature sites, skill fit, and gear planning notes before you lock your trip.
Vaavu is a high-reward atoll for divers who like current-driven channel dives, big fish energy, and a mix of walls, caves, and soft corals. Many itineraries focus on kandus such as Miyaru Kandu (often nicknamed Shark Channel), Kunaavashi Kandu, and full-day adventures to Fotteyo Kandu, then finish the day with the famous night dive at Alimatha Jetty. Dive centers based at resorts and local islands, including operations listed through PADI such as Nakai Alimatha Diving Center and Aqua Quest (NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi), run daily schedules and can match sites to the tide and the group, from beginner-friendly shallow reefs to expert drifts.
Also called "Shark Channel" in Vaavu.

Shallow reef dive with an average depth around 10 m and a max around 15 m.
A top-tier channel dive suited to experienced divers, known for strong current and shark encounters (including grey reef and whitetip reef sharks, with occasional hammerhead sightings).
A drift channel dive split by a thila, with caves and overhangs plus soft corals and dense reef fish.
Wall dive with overhangs and caves, beginning around 5 m to 10 m and extending beyond 40 m.
Operator Checklist
Vaavu diving is tide-dependent. Ask your dive center which kandus are best on incoming vs outgoing flow, and do not hesitate to swap plans if currents are outside your comfort level. Many Maldives operators recommend a reef hook and a surface marker buoy for channel dives, and gloves are commonly discouraged to prevent reef damage. If Fotteyo Kandu is on your list, reserve a full-day trip and confirm deep and current experience requirements in advance.
