When To Go

Season planner for Vaavu Atoll

The Maldives is shaped by two monsoon patterns. The drier northeast monsoon (roughly December to March) usually brings calmer seas and clearer weather, while the southwest monsoon (roughly May to October) tends to bring stronger winds, more rain, and more plankton in the water. In Vaavu, that often translates to easier boat crossings and snorkel visibility in January to April, and more current-driven action and pelagic potential in May to November. Water temperature stays fairly stable around 27°C to 29°C year-round, so planning is mostly about sea state, current strength, and how much variable visibility you are comfortable with.

Ideal: Drier weather, lighter winds often around 18.0 kph, and more reliable sea conditions for transfers.

Plan Carefully: Southwest monsoon brings higher wind and chop, often around 25.0 kph, and short rain squalls.

Peak holiday periods (late December and January) can sell out faster.

Ideal: Often calmer seas and easier diving logistics, with visibility commonly in the 15 m to 30 m range.

Plan Carefully: Wind and surface chop can make crossings rougher, and stronger current days are common. Choose sites based on experience and always carry an SMB.

Southwest monsoon months can be outstanding for experienced drift divers who want channel action, but less comfortable for brandnew divers.

Ideal: More frequent flat-water mornings for technique and line sessions, with water around 28°C.

Plan Carefully: More wind and current. Focus on protected lagoons and avoid kandu mouths unless conditions are excellent and fully supported.

Freediving is safest when you can choose your sessions around sea state.

Ideal: Calmer surface and clearer lagoons, with many house reefs offering 15 m or better on good days.

Plan Carefully: Wind chop reduces comfort. Go guided, use flotation if needed, and avoid channel mouths.

If you are not a strong swimmer, choose trips with a trailing boat and a guide carrying a float.

Ideal: Drier weather for sandbanks and island hopping. Expect daytime highs around 30°C.

Boatbased excursions are the first thing to get cancelled in rough weather.
