Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Velana International Airport (MLE)
  • Typical transfer: Speedboat transfers are commonly about 1.5 to {{ 2 | duration:hours }}s to central Vaavu islands (sea state dependent). Seaplane transfers are typically around {{ 25 | duration:minutes }}utes (daylight only, resort dependent).
  • Entry requirement: The Maldives grants a tourist visa on arrival for many nationalities, typically for up to 30 days, but requirements can include a passport with sufficient validity, confirmed accommodation, and an onward ticket.
  • Getting around: On small islands in Vaavu, you usually walk everywhere.

Getting There

Most travelers fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) in Male. From there, you reach Vaavu by resort-organized speedboat or (for some resort islands) seaplane. If you are staying on a local island guesthouse, arrange a speedboat transfer (often from Male or Hulhumale) or use public ferries when schedules align. Liveaboards typically depart from Male area harbors and include Vaavu as part of a Central Atolls route.

Getting Around

On small islands in Vaavu, you usually walk everywhere. Inter-island travel is by speedboat, dhoni, or public ferry. If you are guesthouse-based, confirm your transfer plan before booking flights because last transfers may not align with late arrivals, especially in rougher seasons.

Entry Requirements

The Maldives grants a tourist visa on arrival for many nationalities, typically for up to 30 days, but requirements can include a passport with sufficient validity, confirmed accommodation, and an onward ticket. A digital Traveler Declaration is commonly required before arrival and before departure. Yellow fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from a yellow-fever risk country. Always re-check requirements with Maldives Immigration and your airline close to travel.

Gear Logistics Checklist

For channel diving, pack an SMB and consider a reef hook if your operator recommends it. Bring a primary torch and backup light for night dives. If you are taking a seaplane, keep essentials (mask, computer, regulator, lithium batteries) in your carry-on when possible, and expect tighter luggage limits than international flights.

Practicalities

Currency

Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR)

MVR is the official currency, but USD is widely accepted at resorts and for many tourist services. On local islands, you may find it easier to pay in MVR for cafes, small shops, and local transport, while cards are more consistently accepted at resorts.

ATMs are most reliable in Male and larger population centers. On smaller Vaavu islands, ATM access can be limited, so withdraw what you need before you transfer out of the capital area.

Electricity

230V 50Hz D, G

Many resorts provide universal outlets, but type G (UK-style) and type D sockets are common. Bring a travel adapter and use dual-voltage chargers for electronics.

Communications

Mobile coverage is good on inhabited islands and in Male, and most resorts have Wi-Fi. Tourist SIMs and eSIMs are available from local providers such as Dhiraagu and Ooredoo. Expect occasional speed drops during storms and on boat crossings.

Language

Dhivehi is the official language. English is widely spoken in resorts, dive centers, and guesthouses.

Insurance

Carry both travel insurance and dive accident insurance if you will be diving. Hyperbaric treatment, medical transfers, and delays due to weather can be costly without coverage.

Packing list

  • For scuba: SMB, reef hook (if your operator uses them), torch and backup light, and a 3mm wetsuit if you chill on long drifts.
  • For snorkel and freedive: rashguard, anti-fog, and a surface float for any off-beach session.
  • For topside: high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen, sun hat, a light rain layer in monsoon months, and mosquito repellent for local islands.
