North Koh Tang drift reef with bommies and current

Local operator required

Remote Koh Tang access and current-led drift timing make a local operator essential.

Boat-only Koh Tang drift site with coral bommies, a current-led route, and planning that depends on operator timing and conditions.

About Fly By

Fly By is a north Koh Tang drift reef for divers who want current, structure, and a moving reef line rather than a static swim. The route runs over rocky seabed with coral bommies near the shallower edge and more relief farther out. Boat timing matters because the best dive is the one the operator can drop and pick up cleanly. When conditions line up, the reef holds dense fish traffic and a fast-moving, open-water feel.

Fly By Planning Details

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.

Reported Depth

2m - 20m

Depth Note

The reef starts shallow and deepens to about 20m+, with the strongest coral around 12m. Use the deeper outer edge as the conservative limit.

Best Season

November to May is the cleaner dry-season window for Koh Tang; June to October is wetter and should be treated more cautiously.

Typical Conditions

Warm tropical water, strong current at Fly By, and generally good clarity on better days. Expect a drift-oriented boat plan rather than a relaxed shore entry.

Safety & Access At Fly By

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Key Hazards

Strong currentWaves

Safety Notes

Use a guide who knows the site, because the current can run fast and the island is remote. Plan gas reserves, drift timing, and surface pickup conservatively.

Access Restrictions

Boat access only; the island is remote and should be arranged through an operator familiar with Koh Tang.

Legal Notes

Koh Tang has a small military presence, so access should stay within operator-led permissions and local coordination.

Local Intel For Fly By

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba

This is a guided drift dive. The reef starts shallow, coral is strongest around the mid-water bommies, and the route deepens toward the outer edge, so air and pickup timing matter.

Freedive

Not a good freedive-first site. The current and boat logistics make it better for scuba drift diving than for casual breath-hold visits.

Snorkel

Snorkeling is not the intended use here. The site is boat-based and current-driven, so the useful terrain sits better in the scuba zone than at the surface.
