Independent long-form trip report with seasonality, depth, and visibility notes.
Los Islotes
Boat-only sea lion rookery with playful shallow-water encounters.
Local operator required
Practical access is by licensed La Paz day boat, with operators handling transport, timing, and current wildlife rules for the protected colony.
About Los Islotes
Los Islotes is the signature sea lion site off La Paz, set on guano-streaked rocky islets at the north end of the Espiritu Santo archipelago. Most visits focus on the playful juvenile colony that works the blue water around the rocks, with schooling fish and the occasional turtle adding to the scene. The site is reached by boat and operators normally work the calmer side of the colony rather than a fixed route. Guided scuba and snorkeling both make sense here, but wildlife rules, seasonal closures, and day-boat timing matter more than chasing a deep profile.

Scuba
Most divers visit Los Islotes on a guided boat day from La Paz. The classic dive stays near the rocks and blue-water edge, letting juvenile sea lions approach the group rather than following a long navigation route.
Snorkel
Los Islotes is also one of La Paz's best snorkel wildlife stops because many encounters happen high in the water column around the colony, not only on a scuba profile.
