Sea lions, whale sharks, and desert-meets-ocean adventures in the Sea of Cortez

Overview
La Paz is the easiest launch point for the wild side of the Sea of Cortez: day boats to Espiritu Santo National Park, sea lion encounters at Los Islotes, blue-water seamount dives at El Bajo Sea Mounts, and photogenic wrecks like the Fang Ming Wreck and C-59 Wreck. Topside, you get the famous curve of Balandra Bay, a lively malecon, and quick escapes into cactus desert and coastal mountains. Plan around seasonal wind and wildlife: whale sharks typically visit La Paz Bay in fall to spring, while summer brings warmer water and bigger pelagic action. Protected-area rules are taken seriously here, and fees help fund conservation and ranger enforcement.
La Paz sits on the western shore of the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California). Most water time happens on day trips: boats leave from the La Paz marina and cross to Espiritu Santo National Park for diving, snorkeling, beach time, and kayaking.

Trip callouts
The Sea of Cortez is globally significant for marine life, and key La Paz highlights sit inside managed protected areas.
You can see sea lions, whale sharks, rays, and reef life on day trips from a single, comfortable base.
Divers, freedivers, snorkelers, and non-divers can share the same boat day to Espiritu Santo and still have an amazing time.
scuba
Why La Paz and Espiritu Santo for Scuba Diving
La Paz is a high-payoff dive base for the Sea of Cortez: playful sea lions at Los Islotes, advanced seamount action at El Bajo Sea Mounts, and surprisingly photogenic wrecks like Fang Ming Wreck and C-59 Wreck. Expect boat diving, variable visibility, and seasonal temperature swings, with some sites offering current and blue-water conditions.
freedive
Why La Paz for Freediving
La Paz is a strong freediving base because deep water is close to shore and the islands create pockets of shelter for skills sessions. On calm days, operators can reach big-water objectives like El Bajo Sea Mounts. On relaxed days, freedivers can combine line training with wildlife-focused snorkeling around Espiritu Santo.
snorkel
Why La Paz for Snorkeling
Snorkeling in La Paz ranges from easy, shallow reef time to bucket-list wildlife. The headline experiences are whale shark snorkeling in La Paz Bay (tour-only, permit-based) and sea lions at Los Islotes when open. Add calm-water beaches and coves on Espiritu Santo for clear, relaxed sessions between boat rides.

What to do when you're not in the water
La Paz delivers a rare combo: a real city with an easy-going malecon, plus quick access to cinematic desert coastlines. Plan a timed-entry visit to Balandra, eat your way through seafood stalls and coffee spots, and use La Paz as a base for day trips to Todos Santos or the kite beaches of La Ventana.
