Dive-center guide for entry, conditions, and site character.
Lovers Point
Protected Monterey shore dive with sandy entry and rocky ridges.
About Lovers Point
Lovers Point is one of Monterey Bay's easiest shore dives, with a sandy beach entry leading into rocky ridges, kelp, and fish-rich structure just offshore. The cove is popular because it offers a straightforward route for new divers and snorkelers while still giving colder-water Monterey character, with rockfish, lingcod, cabezon, perch, and invertebrate life spread across the ridges and nearby pinnacles. It feels more protected than many open Monterey shore sites, but it is still a real ocean entry that changes quickly with surge, swell, and visibility. On calm mornings it can be an approachable first cold-water dive; in rougher weather the same beach can become much less comfortable and far less beginner-friendly.

Safety Notes
Check swell and surf before committing to the beach entry. Even though the cove is relatively protected, Monterey surge and low visibility can turn an easy entry into a poor beginner dive quickly.
Access Restrictions
Lovers Point sits inside a marine protected area, so California MPA rules apply. It remains a public shore-entry site, but harvesting or disturbing marine life may be restricted or prohibited under current state regulations.
Legal Notes
Follow current California marine protected area rules for Lovers Point and the surrounding Pacific Grove shoreline. Do not remove marine life or disturb protected habitat.

Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba
Lovers Point is commonly used for beginner shore dives, refreshers, and guided cold-water introductions because the route is simple when the cove is calm.
Freedive
The cove can work for confident freedivers in calm water, but Monterey surge, cold water, and fast visibility changes still demand conservative site judgment.
Snorkel
Lovers Point can be a good Monterey snorkel site when the cove is calm, especially for kelp and fish life close to shore, but rougher conditions quickly reduce comfort and visibility.
