Most international visitors arrive through Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City, then continue by short domestic flight, ferry, or road transfer. Domestic flights are the fastest way to reach San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia. Water taxis are the budget option for the northern cayes. If your trip centers on southern diving and whale shark season, flying straight onward to Placencia is the cleanest use of time.

Transport style changes by region. San Pedro is built around golf carts and water transfers. Caye Caulker is mostly walking and cycling. Placencia uses taxis, shuttles, rental cars, and boat pickups from lodges or dive shops. Domestic flights save a lot of time, especially if you are combining north and south in one trip.
Belize entry rules depend on passport and residency status, so verify the current policy with Belize Immigration before booking. Many visitors from major tourism markets receive up to 30 days on arrival or visa-free entry, but onward travel, a valid passport, and proof of accommodation or funds may be requested. Belize also uses a digital embarkation and disembarkation process that is worth completing before departure to reduce airport friction.
Belize is easy for rented tanks and weights, but awkward for overweight luggage. Domestic carriers have tight baggage limits, so soft bags beat hard cases unless your operator specifically advises otherwise. Nitrox is common with larger dive operations, especially around Ambergris Caye. Bring spare mask straps, save-a-dive basics, and any specialist adapters you prefer. Keep cameras, computers, and medications in your cabin bag.
Belize Dollar (BZD)
The Belize dollar is fixed at BZ$2 to USD $1, and USD cash is widely accepted in tourism hubs. Expect change in Belize dollars. Cards are common at larger hotels, dive shops, and restaurants in Belize City, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia, but small boats, reserve fees, tips, and local cafes still reward carrying cash.
ATMs are reliable in Belize City, San Pedro, and Placencia, thinner on Caye Caulker, and effectively absent once you move onto outer islands or all-day boat programs. Withdraw before shifting to small islands, liveaboard-style lodges, or multi-day southbound itineraries.

Type A and B sockets are the most common across Belize. Some island hotels and rooms on Ambergris Caye also provide UK-style Type G or 220V outlets. Boat charging points can be limited, so a compact multi-port USB charger is useful.
Communications
DIGI and SMART both cover the main tourism corridors with 4G/LTE service, and eSIM options are available. Connectivity is good around Belize City, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia, then weakens offshore toward the atolls and remote southern waters. Download maps, save WhatsApp contacts, and keep screenshots of tickets before leaving town.
Language
English is the official language, which makes Belize especially easy for English-speaking dive travel. Belizean Kriol is heard everywhere, Spanish is common in many communities, and Garifuna language and culture are especially present in southern coastal areas.
Insurance
Carry both normal travel insurance and dive accident cover. Belize boat days can be far from definitive care, and a serious incident may require evacuation to San Pedro's recompression resources or mainland hospital support. DAN-style coverage is strongly recommended if you plan Blue Hole dives, repetitive days, or mixed scuba and freedive training.
Packing list
Bring a 3mm suit if you chill easily from December through April, and a rashguard or lighter suit for warmer months. Pack an SMB, save-a-dive basics, dry bags, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent for mangrove and jungle days, and a hat that stays on in wind. Soft-sided luggage is the smart default for domestic flights.
