Season planner for New Zealand

New Zealand seasons are defined less by rain vs dry and more by temperature, wind, and swell. Summer is the easiest time to stack regions and book offshore island days. Winter can deliver excellent visibility in the north, but colder water and more frequent fronts. Regional differences matter: Northland stays warmer; Cook Strait and the deep south are more wind-sensitive year-round.

Ideal: Warmest water and longest days. Northland often sits around 18°C to 23°C. More stable high-pressure weather windows.

Plan Carefully: Colder water 8°C to 16°C and more frequent wind events above 30.0 kph. The north can be clearer, but offshore days are less reliable.

If you want the simplest multistop trip, prioritize December to March.

Ideal: Best chance of calm seas for offshore islands and the Lermontov wreck. Water is warmest, commonly 18°C to 23°C in the far north.

Plan Carefully: More fronts and wind. Northland can still deliver visibility of 20 m or more but expect water 14°C to 16°C and shorter dives without strong exposure protection.

For wreck priorities (Marlborough, Wellington), keep buffer days and plan fallback sheltered sites.

Ideal: Often clearer water and fewer summer crowds, while temperatures remain workable with a thicker suit (commonly 14°C to 20°C depending on region).

Plan Carefully: Cold-water focus. More swell and wind on exposed coasts; consider lakes/pools or sheltered bays. Expect temps closer to 12°C to 16°C in many regions.

Freedive events are often scheduled in late summer and early spring.

Ideal: Best warmth for long surface sessions. Northland and the northeast can reach 20°C or higher water on good days.

Plan Carefully: Cold water 8°C to 16°C and more wind. Use thicker suits and keep sessions shorter, especially for kids.

If you are traveling in winter, focus on reserve shore entries on calm days and treat snorkeling like a quick coldwater activity, not an allday beach plan.

Ideal: Longest days, easiest road trips, and the most reliable boat tours.

Plan Carefully: More storms and shorter days, but strong wildlife viewing in places like Kaikoura. Expect colder air and wind.

Topside winter can be spectacular if you plan around storms and bring warm gear.
