Scuba
What It Feels Like
New Zealand scuba is about variety more than one signature reef. The northeast delivers the country's warmest and often clearest diving around Poor Knights Islands and Bay of Islands. Central hubs like Auckland and Hauraki Gulf and Wellington South Coast add city-based logistics, marine reserves, and wrecks. Cross to the South Island for sheltered inlets and big wreck days in the Marlborough Sounds, wildlife-rich coastlines near Kaikoura, and expedition-style fjord walls in Fiordland. Expect cold-temperate water overall, roughly 8°C to 23°C, plus local currents and weather windows that reward flexible planning.

Operator Checklist
- For the easiest first trip, focus on the northeast in summer: combine Poor Knights Islands, Bay of Islands, and a flexible add-on like Mercury Islands (Coromandel). If you want wrecks, build a Cook Strait crossing into the Marlborough Sounds. If you want the most unique cold-water diving, end with Fiordland. Add at least 1 spare day per region for wind and swell. Book marine-reserve trips with reputable operators, and read sanctuary restrictions before any Bay of Islands in-water activity.
