Season planner for Philippines

The Philippines has two main seasonal drivers for water travel: monsoon winds and tropical cyclone activity. In broad terms, west-facing regions (Batangas, Mindoro, much of Palawan) are most reliable in the drier season, while the southwest monsoon can bring more rain and rougher seas mid-year. Offshore parks have their own rules: Tubbataha is strictly seasonal, and remote atolls like Apo Reef depend on stable crossings. Water temperature stays tropical year-round (commonly 26°C to 30°C), so your planning focus should be wind, visibility, and boat schedules rather than cold.

Ideal: Drier season for many west-facing coasts, lighter seas for ferries and small boats, water often 26°C to 30°C.

Plan Carefully: Higher rain and tropical cyclone disruption risk, with more days of winds around 25.0 kph to 35.0 kph on exposed coasts.

Westfacing Palawan and Batangas often feel most predictable in the drier season.

Ideal: Stable seas in many regions, visibility often 15 m to 30 m, warm water 27°C to 30°C.

Plan Carefully: More weather cancellations and reduced visibility on some coasts. Offshore crossings and liveaboard itineraries need extra buffer.

Tubbataha is seasonal by regulation and typically runs in spring to early summer.

Ideal: More frequent calm mornings for line training, with water commonly 27°C to 30°C.

Plan Carefully: More days of wind chop and rain. If winds exceed 25.0 kph, prioritize technique sessions in protected water or switch to pool training.

Because the archipelago has many microclimates, freedivers can often 'chase leeward water' by switching coasts within the same region.

Ideal: Better odds of calm seas and clear water on many west-facing boat routes. Comfortable water 27°C to 30°C.

Plan Carefully: More canceled boat tours and rougher crossings on some coasts. If winds reach 25.0 kph to 35.0 kph, stay in sheltered water.

For nonswimmers or families, prioritize lagoons, lakes, and inbay reef stops where operators can control routes.

Ideal: Drier weather for many western coasts, easier road and ferry days, and more reliable lagoon tours.

Plan Carefully: Rain and storm disruptions are more common. Build buffer for road transfers and boats, and keep a Plan B for outdoor tours.

Domestic travel is the limiting factor.

In some regions, cooler months bring thermoclines that can drop perceived temperature below the first 20 m. Pack an extra layer if you chill easily.
