If you want one country that can deliver macro, reefs, and wrecks without changing languages or time zones, the Philippines is hard to beat. Build a trip around a style: critter hunting in Anilao and Batangas, wreck history in Coron or Subic Bay, or a seasonal liveaboard to Tubbataha via Puerto Princesa. Add warm water (often 26°C to 30°C) and a deep bench of experienced local dive staff, and the main challenge becomes choosing where to focus.
Places to explore
Anilao is one of the Philippines' most reliable bases for short-boat, high-variety diving, with a reputation built on macro life and underwater photography. From Mabini resorts you can reach muck slopes, coral gardens, mini walls, and pier dives in minutes, then scale up to deeper, current-influenced sites toward the Verde Island Passage when conditions are right.

Conditions vary by region. Expect mild to strong current in channels and passes, occasional surge on exposed reefs, and thermoclines in the cooler months. Wreck diving in Coron and Subic can involve penetration risk, silt, and sharp metal, so training and a conservative mindset matter. Offshore atolls (Tubbataha, Apo Reef) are blue-water environments where a surface marker buoy is essential and safety depends on boat procedures and current awareness.
Apo Reef is one of the Philippines' true offshore dive adventures: walls, seamounts, and fast-moving water that keep the reef fed and the pelagics close. Expect classic drift dives on Shark Ridge and North Wall, plus deep pinnacles like Apo 29 where sharks and barracuda stack up in the current.
Coron is renowned for WWII wrecks sunk on 24 September 1944. Most sit between 18 m and 40 m, allowing multi-level dives for Advanced Open Water and technical training for penetration.
El Nido diving is all about limestone topography meeting healthy reef structure: coral gardens for long, easy dives, walls that step down into blue water, and signature swim-throughs like Dilumacad Tunnel. Most sites are reached by banca in short hops from El Nido town, which makes it simple to fit 2 dives into an island-hopping style trip.
Puerto Princesa is the practical gateway for diving Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, a liveaboard-only reef system that opens for a short season each year. Think vertical walls, reef-top coral gardens, and constant motion: drift dives, blue-water entries, and big schools in clear water.
Subic Bay is wreck diving with a capital W: a sheltered Luzon harbor where you can dive multiple ships and aircraft in a single weekend, often with short boat rides and flexible scheduling. It is also one of the Philippines' most practical places to build skills, from your first wreck dive to deep, nitrox, and technical training.
