Scuba

What It Feels Like

U.S. scuba is all about contrast. Warm-water reef and wreck itineraries anchor in South Florida and the Florida Keys, Hawaii delivers clear volcanic terrain and pelagic moments, and California adds kelp forests, sea lions, and cold-water macro. Because conditions are regional, you can often pivot coasts rather than cancel a trip: switch from Atlantic hurricane months to Hawaii summer trades, or from Pacific winter swell to Florida spring reef calm. The country also supports specialty training, from freshwater springs to offshore sanctuary diving.

Signature Sites

Start Here

  • Molokini Crater

Boatonly and famously clear, Molokini Crater is a Maui signature for reef fish, rays, and bigwater scenery.

  • Manta Ray Heaven

For bucketlist night diving, Manta Ray Heaven off Hawaii Island focuses the experience around mantas drawn to lights.

  • Blue Heron Bridge

Macro heaven in Palm Beach: Blue Heron Bridge at Phil Foster Park rewards careful tide planning with dense smalllife encounters.

Level Up

  • Anacapa Island

Channel Islands kelp and sea lions at Anacapa Island, a boatdiving staple of Southern California.

  • Point Lobos

Monterey Bay's showcase: Point Lobos State Reserve and nearby coves offer rich kelp and classic coldwater biodiversity.

  • Stetson Bank (Flower Gardens)

For offshore sanctuary diving in the Gulf of Mexico, Stetson Bank, Flower Gardens is a standout, typically accessed by liveaboard or longrange charter.

Advanced

  • USS Spiegel Grove

A Keys classic: explore the scale and marine growth of the USS Spiegel Grove, a marquee wreck for intermediate and advanced divers.

  • Dry Tortugas

Remote reefs and wrecks live far west of Key West.

Planning Playbook

Operator Checklist

  • Start by choosing your water temperature and movement tolerance:
  • Warm water, easiest planning: Florida Keys and Hawaii. Florida adds wreck density; Hawaii adds island scenery and night dives.
  • Best big-animal odds: Hawaii (year-round turtles, seasonal whales) and offshore Gulf banks.
  • Best for kelp and sea lions: Channel Islands and Catalina Island, plus shore-diving hubs like Monterey Bay.
  • Training-focused: Florida springs and Lake Tahoe (add altitude education).

Conditions Fallback

  • Then match season to coast: late summer and early fall can be excellent in California and Hawaii but demand hurricane awareness in Florida. Winter is prime for Hawaii whale season but can bring bigger surf on north-facing shores.

Avoid

  • Do not ignore hurricanes and tropical storms (atlantic and gulf) advisories from local operators.
