When To Go

Season planner for United States of America

The U.S. is always in season somewhere. Use the calendar to pick a coast, then use local forecasts to pick the exact sites. Florida and Hawaii support year-round diving, but late summer brings the highest hurricane risk in the Atlantic and Gulf. California and the Channel Islands often feel best when swell is low and visibility trends up in late summer and fall. Freshwater springs are the most condition-proof option and can rescue a windy week.

Ideal: Broad sweet spot: warmer water in Florida, improving visibility in California, and more stable seas on many Hawaiian coasts.

Plan Carefully: Winter surf and storms affect the Pacific, while late summer is peak hurricane vigilance for Atlantic and Gulf regions.

Regional differences matter more than the month.

Ideal: More predictable boat days and better averages across Florida, Hawaii, and California; water typically ranges 23°C to 28°C in warm regions.

Plan Carefully: Pacific storms and colder water, plus peak hurricane-season risk in Florida and the Gulf in late summer.

For warmwater reef trips, Florida Keys and Hawaii are the most forgiving.

Ideal: Calmer seas and warmer water increase comfort and visibility; winds are often around 25.0 kph or less in morning windows.

Plan Carefully: Winter swell and storms challenge open-ocean training on the Pacific; use sheltered sites or pivot to springs.

Florida springs stay near 22°C yearround and are a reliable backup for breathhold and technique days.

Ideal: Warmer water and calmer seas improve comfort and safety; visibility is often best after multiple calm days.

Plan Carefully: Winter swell and surf make many Pacific entries unsafe; choose sheltered bays and guided boats.

Snorkel safety is mostly about waves.

Ideal: Beach and boat conditions are generally friendlier, with warm air and longer days across most coasts.

Plan Carefully: Winter storms, bigger surf, and shorter days on many coasts; Hawaii remains strong for whale watching with smart shoreline choice.

If your main goal is ocean wildlife, winter is a feature, not a bug: Hawaii humpback whales peak in winter months, but surf can dictate where you go.
