When To Go

Season planner for Byron Bay and Nguthungulli Julian Rocks

Byron Bay diving and snorkeling runs year-round, but conditions and highlights change with current, swell, and rainfall. Water temperature typically ranges from around 18°C in late winter to about 26°C in late summer. Winter and spring are prime for grey nurse sharks and whale migration, but southern swell can be more frequent and may cancel trips. Summer and early autumn bring warmer water and longer snorkel comfort windows, with leopard sharks and manta rays more likely when warm current pushes in. For the best odds, book early departures and keep at least one spare day for weather.
