When To Go

Season planner for Cape Town

Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate: warm, dry and windy summers from about November to March, and cooler, wetter winters from June to August. Sea temperatures lag the seasons, with False Bay ranging roughly from 14°C in mid-winter to around 19°C in late summer, while the Atlantic tends to be a few degrees colder year round. Diving is possible throughout the year by switching coasts, but specific encounters and comfort levels shift month by month.

Ideal: Warm, mostly dry days with mean temps around 21°C, long daylight hours and frequent south-easterly winds. Expect lively afternoons but plenty of beach and hiking weather.

Plan Carefully: Coolest, wettest months with frequent cold fronts, heavy rain and big swell, but lush fynbos and strong chances for whale sightings on clear days.

December and early January are peak local holiday periods with busy beaches and higher prices.

Ideal: Summer gives cold, clear Atlantic kelp dives under strong south-easterly wind, while early winter can deliver calm, clear days in False Bay with good viz on wrecks and pinnacles. Water typically ranges from about 10°C to 17°C

Plan Carefully: Winter fronts bring strong wind, swell and rain; False Bay can still offer excellent viz in the gaps, but blown-out weekends are common. Upside: whales, dramatic skies and fewer boats at popular sites.

Plan at least four or five dive days to ride out weather shifts.

Ideal: Warmest air temps and more stable weather, with False Bay water often around 16°C to 19°C. Ideal for multi-session days in open-cell suits, line training and snorkel combos.

Plan Carefully: Coldest water and biggest swells; kelp sessions can still be magical on calm days but expect more cancellations and a heavier emphasis on lakes and pools for structured training.

Freedive schools run year round but will often move to sheltered coves, tidal pools or indoor facilities when ocean conditions are rough.

Ideal: More frequent calm mornings, good light and relatively warmer water in False Bay make these months best for guided kelp and seal trips. Operators may avoid mid-winter entirely for offshore seal snorkeling.

Plan Carefully: Coldest and stormiest period; offshore snorkel trips often pause, but sheltered tidal pools and boardwalk penguin viewing remain good options on clear days.

Try to schedule seal snorkeling early in your visit and allow at least one alternate day for weather.

Ideal: Warm, dry and windy. Great for beaches, outdoor dining and mountain days if you start early before winds and heat. Sun is intense; fire risk can close some hiking areas.

Plan Carefully: Expect rain, big surf and shorter days, but whale watching and wild flowers take off. Keep plans flexible and follow local safety advice for roads in heavy weather.

Winter is offpeak for general tourism and can be very rewarding for photographers and nature lovers who do not mind bundling up.

From early winter through spring, southern right whales gather in False Bay and along the nearby coast to breed and calve, joined by migrating humpbacks and resident Bryde's whales. Shore lookouts around Simon's Town, Kalk Bay and beyond, plus dedicated boat trips and Hermanus excursions, all offer good chances of sightings.

African penguins at Boulders Beach breed mainly from February into winter, with peak nesting activity in roughly March to May and fluffy chicks visible near the burrows. January is good for spotting molting juveniles on the sand. Boardwalks and strict viewing rules keep disturbance low.

Cape fur seals pupping season peaks in early summer, and by late summer juveniles at colonies such as Duiker Island shift from competitive and noisy to playful and curious. This is prime time for seal snorkeling and surface viewing in generally calmer weather.

Late winter and early spring rains trigger fynbos and wildflower blooms across the Cape Peninsula and nearby West Coast reserves, making day trips from Cape Town spectacular for hikers and photographers on non-dive days.
