Scuba

What It Feels Like

Scuba here is about small-scale Mediterranean exploration: reserve permits, rocky coves, island walls, posidonia meadows, swim-throughs and boat dives rather than big-resort infrastructure. Denia operators such as Mon Diving work the Cabo de San Antonio side, while Xabia/Javea operators use Portitxol, Granadella and nearby cove routes. Visibility is often best after calm weather, but it can drop after wind, swell or runoff. Most visiting divers should book guided dives, because the marine reserve rules, boat traffic, entry points and wind exposure are easier to manage with local knowledge.

Signature Sites

Start Here

  • Portitxol Island South

The south side of Portitxol Island is known for posidonia, boulders and varied fish life.

  • Portitxol Island North

A classic Xabia island profile with rock structure, lightandshadow swimthrough scenery and fish shelter.

  • Cala Granadella

A compact, crystalline Xabia cove that works well for shallow reef, training and guided beginner dives when sea state allows.

Level Up

  • Les Rotes and Punta Negra

Denia's rocky Les Rotes coast gives easy visual context for the reserve: ledges, boulders, posidonia and snorkeltoscuba terrain.

Advanced

  • Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserve

The destination's signature protected cape, with rocky walls, sandy passages, posidonia, caves and fish refuge habitat.

  • Cova Tallada

A dramatic sealevel quarry cave in the cliffs between Denia and Xabia.

Planning Playbook

Operator Checklist

Book early for July and August, and ask whether the planned dive is inside the marine reserve. Confirm that the operator handles the required authorization. Build a spare day for wind-related site swaps. Summer water can be comfortable in a 3mm to 5mm suit, while winter divers often prefer 5mm to 7mm plus hood. Bring certification card, insurance details, DSMB, cutting tool, hard-sole booties and a compact torch for overhangs. Do not anchor privately in the reserve, do not collect marine life and keep fins clear of posidonia.
