Safety And Conservation
The main safety themes are reserve compliance, wind-exposed headlands, rocky exits, summer boat traffic, heat and Cova Tallada's lack of mobile coverage or lifeguard. Conservation is equally important: Cabo de San Antonio protects valuable seabed, posidonia and fish refuge habitat. Visitors should use authorized operators, avoid anchoring, avoid collecting, keep fins off seagrass and leave no trace in caves or coves.
Top Risks
- Primary risk: Marine reserve rules are strict
- Secondary risk: Cova Tallada is not a casual beach walk
- Emergency contact: European emergency number (112)

Dive safety
Use local operators for reserve dives, especially around Cabo de San Antonio and Cova Tallada. Carry a DSMB, listen to the skipper's site briefing and ask what the wind backup plan is. Do not enter overhead environments unless trained and equipped. For snorkel and freedive sessions, use a visible float, avoid boat channels and never dive alone. Pebble entries can be harder to exit than they look, especially when afternoon wind adds chop. If waves are breaking onto boulders, choose another cove or make it a topside day.
Call 112 first for life-threatening emergencies in Spain. Divers with suspected decompression illness should also contact DAN Europe as soon as practical after local emergency care is activated. Denia has a regional public hospital, but recompression logistics can require transfer and should be coordinated by emergency doctors, DAN and 112 rather than self-directed driving. Keep insurance details, certification cards, medication lists and emergency contacts in your dive bag and phone.
Snorkel and freedive safety
Marine reserve rules are strict
Do not assume that a beautiful cove is open for private diving, fishing, anchoring or collecting. Cabo de San Antonio has regulated scuba access, fishing restrictions and no-take conservation rules.
Cova Tallada is not a casual beach walk
The official warning is serious: no mobile coverage, no lifeguard and a route that is not recommended for people unused to mountain hiking. Carry water, footwear and ID with the reservation.
North and northeast wind can change everything
The cape is exposed. A good operator may swap sites, delay departures or cancel. Self-guided snorkelers should avoid boulder entries when waves are breaking onto the rocks.
Summer heat and cove access pressure
July and August can mean packed parking, high UV, traffic controls and crowded water. Start early, carry water and do not plan exposed hikes in the hottest hours.
Wildlife and protected areas
Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserve restricts unauthorized diving, recreational fishing, anchoring, collecting marine organisms and motorized underwater activity. Posidonia meadows are essential Mediterranean habitat: do not fin, stand, drag kayaks or anchor on them. Do not remove shells, rocks, plants or animals from coves. At Cova Tallada, keep to approved access, carry out all trash, avoid loud behavior in cave spaces and respect time limits during regulated periods. For cetaceans, choose responsible observation and never seek to swim with whales or dolphins.
Do Not Do This
Avoid entering when marine reserve rules are strict. Confirm local briefings before committing.
