  • Getting around: Fuvahmulah is compact and easy to get around.

Getting There

Most visitors route internationally into Velana International Airport (MLE) in Male, then connect on a domestic flight to Fuvahmulah Airport (FVM). Domestic flights are the practical option for dive trips because Fuvahmulah is far south.

If you are already in the southern Maldives, you can also connect via Addu City: fly to Gan International Airport (GAN), then take the public ferry from Feydhoo to Fuvahmulah when schedules line up.

Build buffer time into both ends of the trip. Weather and operational changes can affect flights and ferry departures, especially in southwest monsoon months.

  • Most ride distances are short; the island is roughly 5 km end-to-end, so even a full loop is quick.

Entry Requirements

Tourist Entry Basics

  • The Maldives issues a free tourist visa on arrival for up to 30 days for travelers who meet entry requirements (passport, onward ticket, accommodation, and sufficient funds).
  • All travelers must submit the Maldives Traveller Declaration electronically via IMUGA within 96 hours of the flight time (both arriving to and departing from the Maldives).
  • Yellow fever vaccination proof is required if you are arriving from a yellow-fever risk country.
  • Always check Maldives Immigration for any nationality-specific restrictions or updates before booking.

Customs and Local-island Notes

  • Maldives Customs prohibits importing alcohol.
  • Fuvahmulah is an inhabited local island, so expect modest dress standards away from tourist beach zones.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Domestic Flight Baggage

  • Domestic flights can have stricter baggage limits than international legs. Confirm your allowance before you pack heavy camera housings or multiple fins.
  • Consider pre-booking extra weight if you are traveling with full scuba gear.

Protect Essentials

  • Carry regulators, dive computer, mask, and cameras in your cabin bag.
  • Use a dry bag on boats and for scooter rides during rain showers.

On-island Support

  • Dive operators can usually supply tanks and weights. Spares for technical parts are limited, so bring key spares (mask strap, fin strap, o-rings).

Practicalities

Currency

Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR)

MVR is the official currency, but USD is commonly used for tourism services and some dive pricing. On a local island like Fuvahmulah, small cash (MVR) is helpful for snacks, local transport, and some entry fees.

Bank of Maldives operates in Fuvahmulah, and a USD ATM service was introduced in the city in 2025. Carry a backup card and some small MVR in case an ATM is offline or out of cash.

Electricity

230V 50Hz D, G

Type G (UK-style) is common, but you may also see Type D. Bring a universal adapter and a surge-safe charger.

Communications

Mobile coverage is generally good on inhabited islands. For travelers, a local SIM or eSIM from Dhiraagu or Ooredoo is the most practical option. Most guesthouses offer Wi-Fi, but do not assume high upload speeds for large photo backups.

Language

Dhivehi is the national language. English is widely used in tourism, dive centers, and guesthouses.

Insurance

Carry dive accident insurance that covers hyperbaric treatment and evacuation (DAN or equivalent). Given the open-ocean nature of Fuvahmulah diving, also carry travel insurance that covers flight disruptions and extra accommodation nights.
