Overview

Expedition diving and Arabian Sea megafauna off Dhofar's wild island frontier

Hallaniyat Islands (also called Khuriya Muriya) are a remote Arabian Sea archipelago off Oman's Dhofar coast, reached via Salalah plus a long coastal drive and boat charter. In season (roughly October to May), divers come for expedition-style boat diving with low crowd levels, dramatic rocky reefs, and a real chance of big-animal encounters like the endangered Arabian Sea humpback whale population that stays in Omani waters year-round. Reef manta rays are also reported in the area, with seasonal aggregations. A Royal Decree in 2025 established the Hallaniyat Islands Marine Buffer Zone reserve, and the Environment Authority is expected to regulate access, fees, and permitted activities. Plan like an expedition: limited services, variable visibility, and weather that can change fast.

What Makes It Special

  • Newly established marine reserve

Royal Decree 96/2025 created the Hallaniyat Islands Marine Buffer Zone reserve, with detailed access rules and fees to be issued by the Environment Authority.

  • Endangered resident humpback whales

The Arabian Sea humpback whale subpopulation is rare and non-migratory; encounters are possible year-round in Omani waters, with strict responsible viewing practices recommended.

  • True off-grid diving

Most trips are liveaboard or multi-day charters with long crossings, limited infrastructure, and a real expedition vibe.

  • Two very different seasons

October to May is typically the workable offshore window for diving. June to September is Khareef in Dhofar: a prime topside season, but often challenging for offshore crossings.
