What It Feels Like

Hallaniyat Islands are for divers who want an expedition, not a resort schedule. In the calmer season (generally October to May), operators out of Salalah and Mirbat run trips that focus on boat-only sites, dramatic rocky reefs, and the kind of wildlife encounters Oman is famous for, including Arabian Sea humpback whales and occasional manta rays. Add genuine history with documented wreck sites in Ghubbat ar Rahib Bay, and you have one of Oman's most distinctive, least-crowded dive regions.

Operator Checklist

  • Go with a specialist operator. Many trips are seasonal expedition itineraries (liveaboard or multi-day charters) rather than daily resort shuttles. Examples marketed for this area include Hallaniyat-focused liveaboard weeks and dive safaris run from the Salalah/Mirbat region.
  • Permits may apply. The Hallaniyat Islands Marine Buffer Zone reserve was established by Royal Decree 96/2025, with detailed rules (fees, entry, activities) to be issued by the Environment Authority.
  • Build weather buffer days. Crossings and anchorage choice are highly weather-dependent, especially outside October to May.

Conditions Fallback

  • Respect wildlife. Treat whale encounters as a privilege: reduce speed, keep distance, and avoid crowding or chasing.
