A city base with a five-island marine park on your doorstep
Updated Feb 13, 2026 • 11 sources
Overview
Kota Kinabalu (KK) on Sabah's west coast is one of the rare places where you can base in a full-service city and still reach a protected island marine park before your coffee cools. Tunku Abdul Rahman Park (TARP) is a five-island state park about 3 km offshore, with coral gardens, training-friendly slopes, and easy day boats from Jesselton Point.
Expect warm water around 27°C to 30°C, variable visibility, and a mix of reef fish, turtles, and macro life. Divers add nearby Sepanggar reefs for clearer water, and keep an eye out for seasonal whale shark sightings around February to April.
Topside, KK is a launchpad for Mount Kinabalu highlands, wetland wildlife cruises, and the Kaamatan harvest festival in May.
Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is roughly 3 km offshore, so you can base in Kota Kinabalu with full city services and still do real reef days.
Shallow slopes and protected bays support Open Water courses, refreshers, and relaxed photography-focused dives.
Non-divers can beach, snorkel, and hike while divers do 2-tank days in the same park.
Some operators report seasonal whale shark sightings around February to April in waters near the park. Sightings are never guaranteed.
