Overview
Lake Constance pairs serious freshwater diving with one of Central Europe's easiest mixed-interest lake trips. Most dives are shore-based around Uberlingen, Meersburg, Wallhausen, Kressbronn, and the Friedrichshafen area, where training slopes, abrupt walls, submerged features, perch, pike, crayfish, and low-light cold-water conditions reward careful local planning. Summer gives the simplest entry, lido, ferry, and family itinerary, while experienced cold-water divers often favor late autumn through early spring for the chance of clearer water. The lake sits around 395 m above sea level, so PADI-style altitude procedures apply. Regulations are site-specific: Alpha flags, shipping exclusions, seasonal windows, protected areas, and the Teufelstisch permit system matter. Above water, Konstanz, Mainau, Reichenau, Meersburg, Friedrichshafen, vineyards, thermal baths, cycling, and a dense rail-ferry network make it unusually strong for non-divers.
Training slopes, silty shallows, steep walls, submerged structures, and cold-water fish create several distinct dive styles within one lake.
Supervised beginner sites coexist with walls extending far beyond recreational depth, supporting a clear progression from buoyancy practice to advanced and technical diving.
Summer favors courses and mixed-group trips. Late autumn through early spring can reward equipped cold-water divers with better visibility.
Historic towns, islands, museums, thermal baths, ferries, cycling, vineyards, and family lidos give non-divers a full itinerary.
