Overview

Fjord cruising, limestone pinnacles, and low-crowd diving at Oman's northern tip

Musandam is Oman's dramatic northern peninsula at the Strait of Hormuz, where rugged Hajar cliffs drop into fjord-like inlets called khors. Divers come for boat diving on limestone pinnacles and walls, including Lima Rock and Octopus Rock, plus soft-coral reefs near Zighy Bay. The water is nutrient-rich, so visibility can be moderate, but marine life is busy: schooling reef fish, rays, turtles, octopus, and seasonal whale shark chances (most often in winter to early spring).

Non-divers are just as happy: traditional dhow cruises through Khor Sham often spot dolphins, with swim and snorkel stops at Telegraph Island and nearby coves. Base yourself in Khasab for fjords and mountain safaris, or in Dibba/Zighy Bay for resort-level logistics. Musandam also works as an easy add-on from the UAE, with overland access from Dubai and flights into Khasab (KHS) from Muscat.

What Makes It Special

  • Fjord geography

Sail, dive, and snorkel inside sheltered khors like Khor Sham, then head offshore to current-swept pinnacles near the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Signature pinnacles

Lima Rock and Octopus Rock offer caves, fissures, and steep drop-offs that feel more like offshore seamounts than coastal reefs.

  • Wildlife plus scenery

Dolphins are commonly seen on fjord cruises, while divers look for rays, turtles, octopus, and seasonal whale sharks.

  • Easy add-on from the UAE

Many travelers pair Musandam with Dubai or the UAE East Coast, using overland border crossings or a quick hop to Khasab (KHS).
