When To Go

Season planner for Perhentian Islands

Perhentian sits on Malaysia's northeast coast, so the big planning lever is the monsoon cycle. The Northeast Monsoon (typically November to March) brings higher winds, rougher seas, and heavier rain, which can suspend boat transfers and close many resorts and dive shops. Most travelers target March to October, with especially steady conditions often found mid-season. Water stays tropical (commonly around 28°C), while visibility is generally best outside the monsoon window.

Ideal: Warmer, drier stretch with more reliable sea crossings and lighter day-to-day wind, often around 20.0 kph to 30.0 kph.

Plan Carefully: Northeast Monsoon risk: stronger winds, rough seas, and reduced boat schedules. Many island businesses pause.

Peak crowds often align with school holiday periods (especially June to August).

Ideal: Best odds of clear water and consistent boat access. Typical visibility 15 m to 25 m on many sites.

Plan Carefully: Many dive operations close. Seas can be too rough for regular diving and crossings.

If you want Tokong Laut and other exposed sites, aim for calmer midseason days and follow operator call on current and surface conditions.

Boat traffic peaks midday in high season.

Ideal: Clearer water and calmer bays for beach-entry snorkeling. Visibility often 8 m to 15 m close to shore.

Plan Carefully: Rougher seas and reduced services. Snorkeling may be limited to very sheltered water when safe.

For the calmest surface water, snorkel at sunrise or in sheltered coves, and avoid jetty areas when boats are active.

Plan Carefully: More rain and wind, and fewer open restaurants and services on the islands.

If you want the islands to feel lively, aim for June to August.
