Scuba
What It Feels Like
Protea Banks delivers South Africa's signature big-animal scuba in a compact day-trip format from Shelly Beach on the Hibiscus Coast. Expect deep reef ledges, caves, and sand channels that pull in sharks and pelagics on the Agulhas Current. Most dives are drift dives with blue-water ascents, so buoyancy, situational awareness, and DSMB skills matter as much as your certification card. Time your trip for winter ragged-tooth sharks in the Northern caves, or warmer months for schooling hammerheads, tiger sharks, and bull (Zambezi) sharks. Local operators such as African Dive Adventures and Dive In Adventure Tours run RIB launches through the surf and handle the offshore logistics.
Signature Sites
Start Here
A slightly shallower pinnacle system, often dived around {{ 26 | distance:m }} to {{ 30 | distance:m }}, with sand patches and structure that can be excellent for sharks passing close to the reef.
A currentswept reef zone associated with seasonal schooling hammerheads and frequent shark flybys.
A gully and ledge area where pelagic fish activity can be intense, with sharks often using the same corridors.
Advanced
The deeper of the two main reef systems, with ledges and dropoffs that often start around {{ 32 | distance:m }} and run toward {{ 40 | distance:m }}.
Cave and overhang systems where raggedtooth sharks (sand tigers) gather in season.
A deep sand channel often referenced around {{ 40 | distance:m }} that can produce dramatic shark passes and seasonal giant guitarfish sightings.
Planning Playbook
Operator Checklist
- Bring proof of certification and recent logged dives. Many operators screen for deep and drift experience.
- Ask whether Nitrox is available and whether your planned profiles fit your training and gas planning.
- If an operator offers a baited shark dive, confirm they hold the required permit to attract sharks in the MPA.
- Expect a wet, fast boat day. Pack gear in a soft bag, keep electronics in a dry bag, and plan for spray and wind on the ride.
- Practice DSMB deployment before you arrive. Blue-water ascents are normal here, not a rare contingency.
Conditions Fallback

- If an operator offers a baited shark dive, confirm they hold the required permit to attract sharks in the MPA.
- Expect a wet, fast boat day. Pack gear in a soft bag, keep electronics in a dry bag, and plan for spray and wind on the ride.
Avoid
- Do not ignore surf launches and wet boat logistics advisories from local operators.
