When To Go

Season planner for Protea Banks

Protea Banks is diveable year-round, but the experience changes by season. Winter (Jun to Aug) tends to be drier on land, with cooler water that can sharpen visibility and bring peak ragged-tooth shark numbers in the caves. Late winter into spring (Sep to Nov) can add whale sightings and the start of stronger pelagic movement. Summer (Dec to Mar) is warmer and wetter, and often the best window for tiger sharks and other warm-water sharks, but it can also bring more wind and variable sea state. For snorkeling and beach time, warmer months generally feel better, while divers often prefer winter clarity.

Ideal: Milder, drier feel on land with more reliable outdoor plans and typically lighter winds around 19.0 kph to 24.0 kph.

Plan Carefully: Hotter, wetter summer period. Expect higher humidity, more rain, and stronger breezes that can push wind-driven chop offshore.

Domestic school holidays (especially Dec and early Jan) can raise accommodation prices and fill roads.

Ideal: Cooler water can improve clarity and brings peak ragged-tooth sharks in the caves. Boat days can feel chilly in spray.

Plan Carefully: Warmer water and tiger-shark season overlap, but summer weather can be more variable with wind and rain. Pick longer trips so you can wait out cancellations.

If your goal is raggedtooth sharks, prioritize late autumn through winter.

Ideal: Warmer water for longer sessions and comfortable training in tidal pools. Early mornings often have the calmest surface.

Plan Carefully: Cooler water and brisker air can shorten session time. Still possible in tidal pools, but bring extra warmth.

Treat offshore freediving as an occasional bonus, not the core plan.

Ideal: Warmest air and water for casual rock-pool snorkeling. Expect more crowds during holiday periods.

Plan Carefully: Cooler water and more wind. Rock pools can still work well, but comfort and visibility depend on recent swell.

Snorkeling here is about protected pools and coves, not offshore reefs.
