Protea Banks is an offshore reef system in KwaZulu-Natal's Hibiscus Coast, launched from Shelly Beach near Margate and Port Shepstone. Set in the warm Agulhas Current on the edge of the continental shelf, it is famous for high-adrenaline shark encounters on deep drift dives. Most dives run around 26 m to 40 m, with negative entries and blue-water ascents common. Winter brings peak ragged-tooth shark numbers in the caves and can overlap with the annual sardine run. Spring and summer add schooling hammerheads, tiger sharks, bull (Zambezi) sharks, oceanic blacktips, and occasional giant guitarfish. It is not a beginner destination, but experienced divers get some of South Africa's most rewarding big-animal dives within a day-trip radius. On land, base in Shelly Beach, Margate, Ramsgate, or Southbroom for Blue Flag beaches, coastal restaurants, and easy access to Oribi Gorge.
