Local operator required

Strong local operator support is effectively mandatory here because launch calls, current timing, and drift pickup all depend on local sea-state judgment.

Boat-only dives run offshore from Shelly Beach and are planned around weather, launch conditions, and shark season, with strong current often shaping the whole dive.

About Protea Banks

Protea Banks is an offshore fossilized reef system off Shelly Beach, best known for advanced blue-water drift diving over pinnacles, gullies, caves, and ledges with regular big-shark traffic. The site rises abruptly out of deeper water, so the whole experience feels exposed from launch to pickup and conditions can change quickly with sea state and current. For experienced divers it is a serious South Coast pelagic-and-reef dive rather than a relaxed sightseeing reef.

Protea Banks Planning Details

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.

Reported Depth

27m - 40m

Depth Note

Most public site guides place the main reef and pinnacles at roughly 27 m to 40 m, with some shark-focused hangs or baited encounters happening shallower on separate profiles.

Best Season

Protea Banks is dived through much of the year, but divers usually choose timing by target species: summer for schooling hammerheads and frequent tiger or blacktip activity, winter into spring for ragged-tooth shark season and the nearby sardine-run window.

Typical Conditions

Expect offshore drift diving with blue-water descents, variable visibility, and current that can range from manageable to forceful. Conditions are shaped more by Agulhas current strength, swell, and launch weather than by any sheltered inshore fallback.

Safety & Access At Protea Banks

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Key Hazards

Dangerous wildlifeStrong current

Safety Notes

This is an advanced offshore drift site where sea state, descent timing, and pickup discipline matter as much as bottom time. Expect blue-water entries, strong current on some days, and regular close shark encounters that demand calm buoyancy and solid situational awareness.

Access Restrictions

Practical access is by local operator boat only, and launches are weather dependent. Trips can be delayed or cancelled when surf, swell, or current make the Shelly Beach run or pickup unsafe.

Legal Notes

Protea Banks sits inside the Protea Banks Marine Protected Area. Shark protections and marine protected area rules apply here, and any commercial tourism activity needs to follow the current South African MPA and permit framework.

Local Intel For Protea Banks

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba

Most Protea Banks dives are advanced scuba drifts over the reef edge, gullies, and pinnacles, with the route built around current direction and shark activity rather than a fixed out-and-back line. Divers should be comfortable with negative or blue-water descents, mid-water ascents, and pickup procedures in open water.

Freedive

Freediving here is specialist-only rather than a routine recreational option. Offshore boat logistics, shark-focused planning, and open-water current make it a fit only for very experienced divers working with a local team that specifically supports that style of diving.

Snorkel

Protea Banks is not a practical general snorkel site. The reef is offshore, deep, and current-driven, so surface-only visitors are usually better served by more sheltered South Coast snorkel options.
