Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Honiara International Airport (HIR)
  • Typical transfer: Usually 25 to 40 minutesutes by taxi, minibus, hotel shuttle or operator transfer to Honiara hotels and wharves, traffic dependent
  • Entry requirement: Visitors should check Solomon Islands Immigration before travel.
  • Getting around: In Honiara, use hotel shuttles, taxis, minibuses, car hire or operator transfers.

Getting There

Most visitors fly into Honiara International Airport on Guadalcanal, then board a liveaboard or operator-arranged boat transfer from Honiara. The Russell Islands are close enough to be included on Central Province routes, but not convenient enough for casual independent day trips unless a specialist operator, weather window and minimum numbers align. Some vessels combine the Russells with Florida Islands, Mary Island, Marovo Lagoon or Honiara wrecks. Private yachts and expedition boats must clear through official ports of entry before going ashore. Add at least one Honiara buffer night when international flights, liveaboard boarding or domestic logistics are tight.

Airports

1

Honiara International Airport

HIR • AGGH

About 12 km east of central Honiara; Russell Islands access continues by vessel or specialist transfer • Usually 25 to 40 minutesutes by taxi, minibus, hotel shuttle or operator transfer to Honiara hotels and wharves, traffic dependent

Main international gateway for Solomon Islands and the normal embarkation city for Russell Islands liveaboards. Scheduled international service is commonly routed through Brisbane, Nadi, Port Moresby or Port Vila, with domestic connections handled by Solomon Airlines.

Transport: Liveaboard transfer, Hotel shuttle, Taxi, Minibus, Car hire

2

Yandina Airport

XYA • AGGY

Inside the Russell Islands group • Local vehicle or boat transfer by prior arrangement; schedules and services must be confirmed before travel

Small domestic airstrip serving the Russell Islands. It is useful for local logistics, bespoke travel or emergencies, but it is not the usual access path for visiting dive liveaboards.

Transport: Domestic flight when scheduled, Local pickup, Chartered boat, Operator-arranged transfer

3

Munda International Airport

MUA • AGGM

Western Province gateway, not a Russell Islands local airport • Use scheduled air connections or a one-way liveaboard itinerary if offered by the operator

Secondary international gateway in Western Province. It is not the standard Russell Islands gateway, but it can matter for extended Solomon itineraries that combine Marovo Lagoon, Western Province and Central Province routes.

Transport: Domestic flight, International Brisbane service when scheduled, Liveaboard route connection

Getting Around

In Honiara, use hotel shuttles, taxis, minibuses, car hire or operator transfers. Once the boat leaves Honiara, transport is by liveaboard tender, charter boat, local tinny or permission-led village pickup. The Russell Islands are not a rideshare or self-drive destination. Roads and air access are limited, and weather can interrupt small-boat movement. For non-divers, the operator's itinerary is effectively the transport plan.

Entry Requirements

Visitors should check Solomon Islands Immigration before travel. Typical tourist entry requires a passport valid for at least 6 months, an onward or return ticket, proof of funds and genuine visitor intent. Many travelers can receive a short visitor entry on arrival, while others may need to apply online through the official eVisa portal. The published tourist visa information lists a 30-day visitor stay and fees for tourist visa and online lodgement, but rules can change by nationality and routing. Keep printed or offline copies of your itinerary, liveaboard confirmation, insurance and accommodation details.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Bring essential personal gear because remote replacement options are limited. A dive computer and SMB are standard expectations on major liveaboards, with a torch needed for night dives. Ask in advance about DIN or yoke valves, rental sizes, camera charging, 110V charging availability, battery rules and oxygen. Pack a 3mm suit or full-length rash layer for 28°C to 30°C water, plus warmer layers if doing four or five dives per day. Do not pack gloves or knives unless your operator explicitly authorizes them. Leave at least 24 hours between your final dive and flying.

Practicalities

Currency

Solomon Islands Dollar (SBD)

Use SBD for local purchases, taxis, markets, village crafts and small tips. Liveaboards may quote fares or onboard charges in USD, AUD or another currency, but remote communities and local transport work best with cash in small SBD notes. Major cards are most useful in Honiara hotels, resorts and larger shops, not in the Russell Islands.

ATMs and foreign exchange are concentrated at Honiara airport, commercial banks and major centers. Withdraw and break notes before boarding because remote islands should be treated as cash-only and offline.

Electricity

220V to 240V 50Hz G, I

Solomon Islands supply is generally 220V to 240V at 50Hz, with Type G and Type I plugs listed. Many liveaboards use Australian-style Type I outlets and may provide dedicated camera charging areas or limited 110V charging. Bring a universal adapter, a small power strip allowed by your vessel and chargers that are clearly dual-voltage.

Communications

Honiara has the best mobile data, hotel Wi-Fi and ability to solve phone issues. Coverage becomes patchy in the Russell Islands, and a liveaboard may rely on satellite systems such as Starlink with limited guest bandwidth. Download maps, tickets, insurance documents and operator instructions before departure. Private yachts should carry independent emergency communications.

Language

English is the official language, but Solomon Pijin is widely used in daily life. In villages, the operator or local host should handle introductions, permissions and etiquette. Learn simple greetings, speak politely and ask before photographing people, homes, churches, gardens or ceremonies.

Insurance

Carry comprehensive travel insurance plus dive accident coverage that includes recompression treatment, medical evacuation, missed liveaboard departure, weather disruption, baggage delay and camera or dive gear if relevant. Several operators require proof of insurance before boarding, and remote evacuation can be expensive even when a chamber pathway exists in Honiara.

Packing list

Pack for warm water, rain, sun and remoteness: 3mm suit or full rash layer, dive computer, SMB, torch, reef-safe sun protection, hat, dry bag, modest village clothes, insect repellent, reusable bottle, seasickness medication, spare mask strap, o-rings, personal prescriptions, cash in SBD, power adapters and camera spares. Bring snacks if you have strict dietary needs and tell the operator early about allergies.
